Story
Raised by a widowed mother, Jill Reed has come a long way from her difficult youth. But while she may not have had money, Jill never doubted she was rich in love. Her mother, Connie, made Jill the center of her world. Now, even though she has a young family of her own, it’s Jill’s turn to care for her ailing mother. When early dementia begins to set in, Connie starts talking about Jill’s “other life.” Jill assumes it’s just rambling confusion. Still, Connie’s stories about Jill’s childhood, and her father’s early death, never quite added up.

Story
The Warmest December is the incredibly moving story of one Brooklyn family and the alcoholism that determined years of their lives. Narrated by Kenzie Lowe, a young woman reminiscent of Jamaica Kincaid's Annie John, as she visits her dying father and finds that choices she once thought beyond her control are very much hers to make.

"Reed's writing opened all of my senses, allowing me to smell the smells or hear the action in ways some books only dream of." --Black&Bookish.com Review "I was impressed with the author's ability to draw one into the story, and appreciated how she wove her story around such an important, life-changing subject... I loved this novel." --5 Star Review Alyssa Elmore, Reader's Favorite Reviewer "The themes of sisterhood and financial freedom, prominent in the book, are very relevant to many women today. I especially liked how the women stood together and helped each other out when any of them ...

Story
Most men barely survive one mother, but Terrance Ellis has three: his aunts. His grandmother Essie's sisters - Eva, Dorothy Mae, and Mamie - lovingly raised him after Essie died in a tragic accident. They made sure that troubled young Terrance got on the right path and made something of his life. And now that he's all grown up and the rising pastor of Houston's Lily Grove church, the endlessly argumentative sisters agree on one thing: Terrance needs to find a wife.

A MATTER OF CONSCIENCE
This is a story that was hard for me to pause and continue, later. Best of all, was the excellent job of the narrator. Her voice, with the Southern accent, and inflections, made me subconsciencely, nod my head in recognition. The actual story, was mind-boggling. And, until the story was nearly finished, I very frustrated with the lead chacerter. What happened to her at an early age; was sad. But, there was no justification for her to keep that terrible relationsip going when she was old enough to know better. I also loved the fact that the author did not stoop to allowing Annette to slim down to what most folks in this country, believes to be the ideal' size 6. Instead, as she grew up, she developed the self-confidence in herself that enbabled her to accept herself for who and what she was. It was a very enjoyable book and I look forward to Part 2.

Intriguing story
Good book some parts hard to hear. Facing the reality of racism and the desperation of women especially black women in those days. Was a book I didn't want to put down.

Awesome
This is a great book. The narrator really brings the characters to life. It proves that even coming out of a tragedy, life can be good.

Story for the Times
Some parts of this are hard to listen to and may be triggering, but the author thoroughly explores different ideals in the African American community that are never discussed just understood. She also explores the complexity of a victim and abuser relationship, so much so, that for me there were parts that made me uncomfortable but they provided a very human and real element to the story. Nothing is ever black and white, this book definitely makes that clear. I enjoyed the book overall but I'm not sure I will read the entire series.

Interesting Story!
This was a great read! The story and characters are very captivating. I do wish there was a warning about the graphic depiction of the abuse of a child. That was triggering.

Still as good as the first time I read it!!!!
Where does God Don't Like Ugly rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Top
What other book might you compare God Don't Like Ugly to and why?
The Upper Room. I love Mary Monroe, and the life she brings to her characters.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Where d I begin???........ There were too many pauses. I mean like, unnecessary pauses. In the middle of sentences!!! It was very annoying. Plus she swallowed so hard throughout the narration, it became distracting. Oh, and tripping over words. Misreading. etc. UGH I am so glad the pulled her after the 1st book. I don't want to hear her read ever again.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Not really. It was a good book, but nothing to keep me glued to the story
Any additional comments?
I read this entire series of books a few years book, and fell in love with the characters. I'm happy I can enjoy this series again (via Audible)
