About this listen
A terrified voice cried out in the night. "Who are you? What do you want?"
The sound of snapping twigs closed in on the five teenagers enjoying an evening around a glowing campfire at Gitchie Manitou State Park. The night of music and laughter had taken a dark turn. Evil loomed just beyond the tree line, and before the night was over, one of the Midwest's most horrific mass murders had left its bloodstains spewed across the campsite. One managed to survive and would come to be known as the "Gitchie Girl". Harrowing memories of the terrifying crime sent her spiraling out of control, and she grasped at every avenue to rebuild her life.
Can one man, a rescue dog, and a glimmer of faith salvage a broken soul? This true story will touch your heart and leave you cheering that good can prevail over the depravity of mankind.

Story
The lone survivor trembled as she pleaded with investigators.... For over 40 years, the events of what happened at Gitchie Manitou the night of November 17, 1973, remained a mystery to all but a few. Then the lone survivor broke her silence. Five teenage friends had driven to the park to spend a few hours around a campfire. By morning, four had been murdered, and only she was still alive. Gitchie Girl Uncovered is a chilling account of the strange twists and bizarre details discovered by an elite team of investigators under intense pressure to catch the killers.

Story
In the tranquil region of southeast South Dakota, word of the young mother who was brazenly abducted from her home in broad daylight shocked residents. Piper Streyle was the second woman to vanish, following the startling incident of a young woman who narrowly escaped abduction by fighting for her life on a dark and secluded highway. An intensive search by an elite team of investigators uncovered a secret crime location, but the discovery of a nightshirt cut in half, a burnt candle, and a homemade bondage board revealed the chilling truth behind the missing women.

Story
In 1927, while the majority of the township of Bath, Michigan, was celebrating a new primary school - one of the most modern in the Midwest - Andrew P. Kehoe had other plans. The local farmer and school board treasurer was educated, respected, and an accommodating neighbor and friend. But behind his ordinary demeanor was a narcissistic sadist seething with rage, resentment, and paranoia. On May 18 he detonated a set of rigged explosives with the sole purpose of destroying the school and everyone in it.

In 1851, Olive Oatman was a 13-year-old pioneer traveling west toward Zion, with her Mormon family. Within a decade, she was a white Indian with a chin tattoo, caught between cultures. The Blue Tattoo tells the harrowing story of this forgotten heroine of frontier America. Orphaned when her family was brutally killed by Yavapai Indians, Oatman lived as a slave to her captors for a year before being traded to the Mohave, who tattooed her face and raised her as their own.

Story
The snow is thick, the phone line is down, and no one is getting in or out of Warbeck Hall. All is set for a lovely Christmas, with friends and family gathered round the fire, except as the bells chime midnight, a murder is committed. But who is responsible? The scorned young lover? The lord's passed-over cousin? The social-climbing politician's wife? The Czech history professor? The obsequious butler? And perhaps the real question is: Can they survive long enough to find out?

Lucas Forester didn’t hate his wife. Michelle was brilliant, sophisticated and beautiful. Sure, she had extravagant spending habits, that petty attitude, a total disregard for anyone below her status. But she also had a lot to offer. Most notably: wealth that only the one percent could comprehend. For years, Lucas has been honing a flawless plan to inherit Michelle’s fortune. Unfortunately, it involves taking a hit out on her. Every track is covered, no trace left behind, and now Lucas plays the grieving husband so well he deserves an award.

The death of a teenage Amish girl in a cornfield looks like an accident, but sheriff Serenity Adams suspects foul play. To solve the murder, she must investigate the nearby Amish community with the help of a man who was shunned years ago. At first glance, the case seems obvious. The poor girl was probably accidently shot during hunting season, but when the elders of the Amish community and even the girl's parents react with uncaring subdued behavior, Serenity becomes suspicious.

Tense, horrific, inspiring. A real horror movie
Such a good book. Told from the POV of Sandra, the sole survivor, and the police detective who believed in her, the book is a tense recollection of what happened that night and the aftermath that followed.
Sandra is such a true survivor, and an inspiration. She had a rough life before the murders and rape, and then dealt with isolation and scrutiny after. Yet, she went on and managed to live the most normal life she could. She's tough!
The book is a little slow at the beginning, talking about Sandra's upbringing, but gets nail biting intense and stays that way. You find yourself wanting to comfort Sandra and stand with her through this ordeal.

Gripping and tragic
Any additional comments?
As edge-of-your-seat as true crime gets. Have to admit that I'm totally creeped out. Easy to understand why ghost hunters still visit the site of this epic tragedy today. The lone, very young survivor was unbelieveably brave and stalwart in facing the monstrous perpetrators at trial. This is the stuff that horror movies and nightmares are made of.

Amazing, unknowingly this book gave me strength. After years of trying to get past my own tragedy, I felt a sense of peace knowing that she faced the similar "just get over it" and "put it in the past" rhetoric. She is my hero.

Decent read - kinda short though
I decided to listen to this book after hearing a Podcast where the author, Phil Hamman, was interviewed. I was a little disappointed in the actual book since I felt it was short for a True Crime novel. However, learning more about Sandra was really great. She is an inspirational person. I wish there would've been more facts related to the crime & trials.
