About this listen
A middle-aged, overweight, and acrophobic newspaper editor Tom Ryan and a little dog, Atticus M. Finch, are an unlikely pair of mountaineers, but after a close friend dies of cancer, the two pay tribute to her by attempting to climb all forty-eight of New Hampshire's four-thousand-foot peaks twice in one winter. Tom and Atticus set out on an adventure of a lifetime that takes them across hundreds of miles and deep into an enchanting but dangerous winter wonderland. Little did they know that their most difficult test would lie ahead, after they returned home....
Following Atticus is ultimately a story of transformation: how a five-pound puppy pierced the heart of a tough-as-nails newspaperman, opening his eyes to the world's beauty and its possibilities. An unforgettable saga of adventure, friendship, and the unlikeliest of family, it's an inspiring tale of finding love and discovering your true self.

Laurie Zaleski never aspired to run an animal rescue; that was her mother Annie’s dream. But from girlhood, Laurie was determined to make the dream come true. Thirty years later as a successful businesswoman, she did it, buying a 15-acre farm deep in the Pinelands of South Jersey. She was planning to relocate Annie and her caravan of ragtag rescues - horses and goats, dogs and cats, chickens and pigs - when Annie died, just two weeks before moving day. In her heartbreak, Laurie resolved to make her mother’s dream her own.

When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of "rogue" wild elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival: they would be killed if he wouldn't take them. In order to save their lives, Anthony took them in. In the years that followed he became a part of their family. And as he battled to create a bond with the elephants, he came to realize that they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty, and freedom.

Arthur Youngblood Hawke, an ex-Navy man moves from rural Kentucky to New York to assault the citadel of New York publishing with his first novel, an oversized manuscript that becomes an instant success. Toasted by critics and swept along on a tide of popularity, he gives himself over to the lush life that gilds artistic success. At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

A man and his dog....
or is it a dog and his man. This is the story of a dog and his friend, Tom Ryan. An unlikely dog owner who, by a twist of fate, got the best friend he could ever ask for. I think that if you are a dog person, that at some point , if you are lucky, you et to have the dog of your lifetime. This is that story! Atticus and Tom were the perfect match for each other. Together they made each other better and together they became what neither could have become alone. A heartwarming story that will make you laugh, cry and want to go spend some together time with your dog. Long live Atticus!!

A remarkable story
This is a remarkable story. I'm a fan of Tom's "Following Atticus" blog, and loved getting the backstory to his adventures with Samwise: first with Max, then Atticus. I wish a professional had read Tom's words. Sometimes I felt Tom was too much into remembering the events to do the telling justice. Even so, I recommend the book for the great story, the honesty of Tom's storytelling, and the beauty of his written word.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
If you like life, dogs, or family; then look no further. This is it.
What did you like best about this story?
You think the book is all about a guy and his dog who climb a bunch of mountains, but NO. The first 3 chapters throw you a curve ball but they are just setting you up for the fast ball right down the middle......swing away.
