About this listen

Flyboys is the true story of young American airmen who were shot down over Chichi Jima. Eight of these young men were captured by Japanese troops and taken prisoner. Another was rescued by an American submarine and went on to become president. The reality of what happened to the eight prisoners has remained a secret for almost 60 years.

After the war, the American and Japanese governments conspired to cover up the shocking truth. Not even the families of the airmen were informed what had happened to their sons. It has remained a mystery - until now. Critics called James Bradley's last book "the best book on battle ever written." Flyboys is even better: more ambitious, more powerful, and more moving. On the island of Chichi Jima those young men would face the ultimate test. Their story - a tale of courage and daring, of war and of death, of men and of hope - will make you proud, and it will break your heart.

brutal truth

very fair look at war. hard to listen to, when your whole life, you feel your side did nothing wrong. Sometimes I had to turn it off it was so brutal but like a car crash you have to see/ hear more.

Worthwhile!!

James Bradley out does other World War II writers in clean language and a very balanced perspective of the war. I found this book, as well as his other one, Flags of our Fathers, extremely interesting. I love when authors read their own books, and I am especially partial to Mr. Bradley's familiar Wisconsin accent. Thanks, Mr. Bradley, for a very well written book that the whole family can listen to!

Fantastic Story

Where does Flyboys rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This one of the best books I've read about World War II for the simple reason that it explains the Japanese culture and why they would not surrender until we dropped the bomb. In addition, there isn't much sugar coating for the actions of the US. This book lays it all out there, the good and the bad, from both sides. My father was a bombardier stationed on Tinian Island and flew many of the incendiary missions over Tokyo. He never talked of his experiences, but this book helps me to understand some of what he went through. Excellent story!

Brutality mixed with humanity

I liked the historical overview of events leading to the main story.
It makes a patriot flinch. No one wants to hear about wrongs their country commits to further national goals or to uphold what the country views as right.
War is brutal period. It can't be civilized. Those who fight bring their own views of civility and humanity.
While it was harsh to bomb Japanese cities, the fact was the Japanese military controlled Japan during WW 2 and showed in its treatment of prisoners of war / it's own citizens that life meant nothing which forced it's enemies to retaliate with every possible measure.
Mr. Bradley did well showing that there were moments of humanity and understanding in the midst of war.

Flyboys

I would recommend this book to be read or listened to as a required reading. There was so much horror all around. History, they say, not learned is history repeated. We may not want history taught too sensitive character, too bad. Grow up! Thank -you.
