About this listen

Remi: It wasn't easy escaping from the prison I'd been locked in. And an escape plan that includes a one-way ticket to an alien planet might not have been my smartest idea. But coming to Tavikh has been the best thing to ever happen to me. If I don't count the vicious aliens who keep trying to kill me.

After one of my friends turns out to be the fated mate of the leader of an alien tribe, we move to their village. I'm happy for her, but if I wasn't going to allow my parents to force me to marry someone, I'm certainly not going to let some goddess.

Especially if it's to the jerk brother of the tribe leader.

Zydon: I disagree with my brother's decision to allow humans to live in our village. It only invites trouble. Not only from our enemies, but now the unmated warriors have become distracted. Just because my brother met his keeshla among the humans doesn't mean anyone else will.

All my hope and prayers are devoted to finding our missing brother. I have none to spare for finding a mate. Even if one of the females fascinates me.

We are constantly clashing. Until an accidental touch triggers my mating marks. I must prove to her that I am worthy of being her mate.

Contains mature themes.

The heroine: Remi - she was from a wealthy family on Earth which she saw as a prison, and she escaped to a starship headed for the planet Tavikh. After the human settlement was attacked and her friend London mated with Zander, the leader of the Tavik, she and the other women that arrived with her moved to the Tavikhi village. Remi was the only human who decided to train with the Tavikhi to become a warrior. She knew she would never be as good as them but wanted to be able to defend herself and help in the protection of the village.

The Hero: Zydon - he is brother to Zander, the leader of their community. His other brother, Zaydum recently went missing and only his bloody sword was found, but Zydon believes he is still alive somewhere. Zydon wasn’t a fan of the humans in the community nearby and never wanted to help them out. He thinks they are lazy, not interested in learning to help themselves. After the Krijese attacked the human settlement, Zander told the humans that moving to the Tavikhi community would be safer for them and any who wanted to move were welcome. Many did come with them and Zydon didn’t like it.

The Story: Unlike many of the humans, that were willing to accept the help of the Tavikhi and moved to the village but still treat the Tavikhi as less than them, Remi actually likes the aliens and gets along well with the warriors she trains with. She is attracted to Zydon but keeps her interest on the down low. Little does she know that he is often looking for her and watching her when she is not paying attention. Though Zydon doesn’t feel that he will ever have a mate. He is solely focused on finding his missing brother.

One thing I really liked about this story was the fact that after Zydon’s mating marks appeared, Remi was at first wary, because of her past and the fact that her and Zydon had only ever argued. But it didn’t take her long at all to come over to the side of liking the fact that he was her mate. Too often in these books either one or the other of the main characters, or sometimes both fight their mating for far too long that it gets old and boring. it highlights one of the most refreshing elements of this story: mutual growth without dragging out the angst. It respects the readers’ emotional investment by letting the characters wrestle with their pasts without sabotaging their present connection.

Remi’s arc is particularly compelling—her rejection of privilege, her hunger for self-sufficiency, and her desire to belong on her own terms resonate deeply. Pairing that with Zydon, who is initially closed-off and judgmental, sets the stage for a dynamic bond built on earned respect rather than forced proximity. The warrior training thread adds a sense of legitimacy to her integration—she doesn’t just get special treatment because she’s the “heroine,” she works for it. I also liked the social friction—humans migrating to Tavikhi space but still holding biases, and Remi quietly subverting that from within. It creates tension beyond just the romance and adds depth to their world.

This audiobook was narrated from multiple perspectives, done in dual narration by Penelope Ann Rose and Chris Chambers. Penelope Rose has a fantastic voice, which is very soft and feminine, I really enjoyed her tone, and she was easy to listen to. Chris Chambers was not one of my favorites, but he did have a decent voice and read at a steady pace.

Very enjoyable alien romance!
