About this listen
Short Guide Offers Practical Advice for Aspiring Expositors of God's Word
Preachers fill our church pulpits, conference stages, and television airwaves. But the question remains: What is good preaching really like? In this accessible volume—written for preachers and preachers in training—pastor David Helm outlines what it takes to be a faithful proclaimer of God's word. After exploring ways preaching can fall short of biblical exposition, Helm outlines a process of sermon preparation that ensures a more accurate handling of the biblical text. Moving from exegesis and theological reflection to the contextualized needs of today, this short book offers practical, step-by-step guidance for preaching that will promote the health and holiness of the church.
- A Great Resource for Church Leaders: Offers accessible and practical guidance for those seeking to strengthen their preaching while remaining faithful to the Bible
- Practical: Draws on the life and work of Charles Simeon, a famous English preacher, with applicable, step-by-step guidance

Story
What do you want most for your kids? A good job? A happy marriage? A long and healthy life? Perfect attendance at every holiday? A life without enemies? David and Esther and Job are not impressed. Some of God’s favorite characters offer us a different vision: make your children count. In this book, the goal for parents is not to keep them forever, but instead, to raise the kind of men and women who know what to do when Goliaths, tyrants, and hurricanes descend. What will your family legacy be?

Story
Central to God’s character is the quality of holiness. Yet most people struggle to define what God’s holiness precisely is. Many preachers today avoid the topic altogether because people don’t quite know what to do with words like “awe” or “fear.” R. C. Sproul, in this classic theological work, puts the holiness of God in its proper and central place in the Christian life. Drawing from both the Old Testament and the New Testament, he paints an awe-inspiring vision of God that encourages Christians to become holy just as God is holy.

It seems like a simple question, yet it has been known to incite some heated responses, even in the church. How are we to formulate a clear, biblical understanding of the gospel? Tradition, reason, and experience all leave us ultimately disappointed.

A Praying Life is a prayer guide that has encouraged thousands of Christians to pursue a vibrant prayer life full of joy and power. A life of prayer invites you to a life of connection to God.

There is much at stake in God making humanity male and female. Created for one another yet distinct from each other, a man and a woman are not interchangeable — they are designed to function according to a divine fittedness. But when this design is misunderstood, ignored, or abused, there are dire consequences.

What is an ideal church, and how can you tell? How does it look different from other churches? More importantly, how does it act differently, especially in society? Many of us aren't sure how to answer those questions, even though we probably have some preconceived idea. But with this book, you don't have to wonder any more.

Story
In every position of power lies the potential for life-giving leadership or destructive corruption. Driven by sinful pride or opportunism, many people abuse their God-given influence, harming the ones they’re called to lead and contributing to an intense angst against authority. The answer to bad authority, however, is not no authority, but good authority—the kind that, according to Scripture, causes those under it to flourish. In this compelling guide from 9Marks, Jonathan Leeman shows that authority, done biblically, is not only good, but is essential to human flourishing.

Story
Throughout Scripture, important biblical figures have faced numerous adversities with remarkable courage. In the New Testament, the apostles endured persecution, imprisonment, and even death for spreading the good news of the gospel. Yet, amid their struggle, they continued to expand the kingdom of God—even rejoicing as they suffered for Christ. How can believers exhibit this same courage today? In Courage, author Joe Rigney explores the Christian virtue of fortitude and its connection to the gospel.

Story
Evangelism is not only misunderstood, it is often unpracticed. Many Christians want to share the gospel with others, but because those Christians don't grasp the fundamentals of witnessing, they feel intimidated and incapable of sharing the truth of the gospel. Yet those believers fail to recognize that God has already established who and how we are to evangelize. In The Gospel and Personal Evangelism, Dr. Mark Dever seeks to answer the four basic questions about evangelism that many Christians ask: Who should we evangelize? How should we evangelize? What is evangelism? Why should we evangelize?

In Truths We Confess, Dr. Sproul introduces listeners to this remarkable confession, explaining its insights and applying them to modern life.

Great book ruined by narration
- By Mr. Steven K. Cooper on 08-06-22
By: R. C. Sproul
This quippy quote, originally from Andrew Lang, encapsulates a key reason why I deeply appreciate this book. In Expositional Preaching, Helm wonderfully distills the essence of Expositional Preaching from various sources, revealing its core principles in a way that feels both insightful and accessible. While many textbooks offer valuable insights on the subject (I am actually reading Power in the Pulpit currently and thoroughly enjoying it), Helm brings it down to earth, guiding the reader through a clear, thoughtful path filled with practical application and deep understanding of the topic. It is a mistake to think that this book is only for pastors because it is immensely helpful for all who want to understand how to support and encourage their preacher in delivering messages that honor God and serve the Church in the most meaningful way. (Which should he all of us).
