Story
It was a crime of senseless violence. On a cold night in a remote Swedish farmhouse, an elderly farmer was bludgeoned to death, his wife left to die with a noose around her neck. As if this didn't present enough problems for Ystad police inspector Kurt Wallander, the dying woman's last word, his only tangible clue, were foreign. If publicized, they could be the match that would inflame Sweden's already smoldering anti-immigrant sentiments.

Story
Lifetime friends become bitter enemies when the father of one family is killed by militants - one of whom is a son from the other family. Told in short sections highlighting a rich multiplicity of characters from all walks of life, Homeland brilliantly unfolds in nonlinear fashion as it traces the moral dilemmas faced by the families of murder victim and perpetrator alike. Aramburu alludes only obliquely to the historical context while he focuses on the psychological complexity of his characters and builds nearly unbearable suspense.

Story
ín Chaparro is a retired detective still obsessed by the brutal, decades-old rape and murder of a young married woman in her own bedroom. While attempting to write a book about the case, he revisits the details of the investigation. As he reaches into the past, Chaparro also recalls the beginning of his long, unrequited love for Irene Hornos, then just an intern, now a respected judge. Set in the Buenos Aires of the 1970s, Sacheri’s tale reveals the underpinnings of Argentina’s Dirty War and takes on the question of justice - what it really means and in whose hands it belongs.

Well braided mysteries
Sicily, situational-humor, verbal-humor, translated, family-dynamics, friendship, law-enforcement*****
What a complex mystery and their bureaucracy is as crazy as ours! The first murder looks like standard mafia stuff, then comes the disappearance of two pensioners. Sandwiched in between is bureaucratic nonsense and developments into the habits if the first victim that are stranger than most. As always, the team works together to get the job done and provide more than a few laughs. Great work by translator Stephen Sartarelli and by narrator Grover Gardner!

You Don't Solve These Mysteries, You Enjoy Them
Six books into this series, the town of Vigata and the cast of regular characters have become as familiar as the place I live and the people with whom I work. So far from breeding contempt, it makes every interaction—serious or humorous—that much more serious or humorous.
Another attraction, at least for me, is the way these stories are told. Rather than letting you fret about that clue you may have missed, Camilleri just wants you to follow along. You’re not going to solve the mystery, so instead you enjoy the characters, their interplay, and the loving descriptions of every meal Montalbano eats.
Now, almost a quarter century after this story was published, with the EU imposing abortion as a requirement for membership, the US making foreign aid contingent on its acceptance, and China harvesting organs from its 1.5 million detainees, the global medical horror show that resides at the heart of this mystery fails to shock as it might once have done. Nevertheless, that doesn’t detract from the excellence of the writing or Grover Gardner’s performance.

A great series
I have recently discovered this wonderful series based in Sicily. And now I can’t stop. Even though these books were written many years ago, the stories are fresh and very interesting. I am not overly impressed with the narration, however. Too reminiscent of Brooklyn. But still I listen because the characters are enjoyable and the plots are interesting. Bring on the next book.
