About this listen

Emily Monroe may be a lot of things, but one thing is for sure, she is not the Chosen One. Now that the truth about Emily and the Chosen One has been revealed to them, they are reeling, and things will never again be the same for Emily at Big Burger. The Chosen One rebels, learning the truth about her family, and the mayor strips her of the mantle of the champion of Big City. While the new hero of the city, Mega Girl, makes dangerous decisions, the Chosen One must learn to be a normal person and get a new job and a normal life.

Per usual Erik Schubach pens a story with twists & platy fun. While Hollie Jackson is the beautiful voice narrating the tale!

As a continuation of Book 1 this is pretty good.

My biggest issue was the cliffhanger ending. The first one wrapped in a way that you could stop there and not feel cheated. Book 2 feels like a prolonged setup to Book 3. It's nowhere near as tight you don't really get any good moments with Emily and Photon. I do appreciate some of the developments and some of the new characters are nice. However we're starting to run into a bad trends I see in Eriks long form work. I call it "friends in high places." Many of his characters end up with family or acquaintances with a great deal of political or financial resources and it really starts to undermine his protagonists when everyone in a position of authority is friendly and always ready to help. This became a huge problem in the The Techromancy Scrolls and I'm cautious that problem is starting to leaking into Emily Monroe.

I hope Book 3 is a bit stronger.

Erik Schubach is better in short form.

The only issues I have are that they are so short and that their releases are so spread out. Otherwise it is an excellent take on superhero fiction with a really fun cast and an amusing voice.

Fun superhero adjacent romp
