Magic is forbidden throughout the Five Provinces; those born with it are hunted and killed. Sable doesn't know her music holds power over souls, not until, at age nine, she plays her flute before the desert court and accidentally stops her baby sister's heart, killing her. Horrified by what she's done and fearing for her life, she flees north, out of Provincial jurisdiction and into the frigid land of exiles and thieves, known as The Wilds. There, Sable lives in hiding, burdened by guilt, and survives as a healer. But now, 10 years later, someone, or something, is hunting her.

I am in love with these characters. What an amazing story
- By LionsDen on 01-25-19
By: Barbara Kloss
The story begins with an incredible prologue that kicks off the story of the Embersoul kingdom with a literal and fantastic bang. We're then greeted over the next chapters with a mix of characters that range from good to decent, alright to bad, and a few who just want to watch the world burn. Along the way we get acquired with different kingdoms that are at times friendly with each other, and at times treacherous and evil against another. Alliances are formed, alliances are broken. All the while we're left asking the question of who's really pulling the strings behind the scenes?
As the story progresses we begin to see individual character storylines converge, often times without a moment to unpack before another calamity strikes. As our key players get acquainted with each other we begin to see their progression as their storylines take shape. Some are cursed, some are injured, some are found at the mercy of dark magic from which there seems to be no cure. Some are born with innate strength they're learning to use for the first time. Others are imbued with magical powers they never knew they had and are challenged to figure out how to use them effectively. Some characters find love in unexpected places. Others who were once in lifelong bondage are found to have something they've never had before; freedom. What is one to do with newfound power, love or freedom? Some characters come to a crossroad from which there is no turning back.
As the story comes to a climax we see characters with interests on both sides of the conflict. What seems like good versus evil may not always be what it appears. Alliances are formed. Battle lines are drawn. The battle of the ages begins. Good versus evil. Strength versus magic. Love and family versus everyone. Who is going to come out on top?
As book 1 comes to a close we learn critical information about the history of the Embersoul kingdom that cannot be unlearned. It makes the book worth reading a second time. We see the aftermath of the epic battle and watch as characters pick up the pieces of their lives in an effort to move forward. We see how answers to ancient prophecies begin to take shape. We get a taste of major implications leading into book 2. Major questions have been answered and yet many more questions arise in the process.
Embersoul is gripping from start to finish. It's fast paced and packed full of action, adventure and magic. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator did a fantastic job keeping the story flowing through character changes, adding inflections for intensity and dramatic effect. I could close my eyes and see the story unfolding in vivid detail. I enjoyed this book in many ways that I enjoyed the Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones and Harry Potter. There are LGBTQ themes and some sexual and language content not suitable for children. Even so, I highly recommend this book. I can't wait for book 2 to come out, and it's been confirmed that there IS a book 2 coming soon.
Gripping, fast paced fantasy epic, a Must Read!
