About this listen

Got wit? We've all been in that situation where we need to say something clever, but innocuous; smart enough to show some intelligence, without showing off; something funny, but not a joke. What we need in that moment is wit - that sparkling combination of charm, humor, confidence, and most of all, the right words at the right time. Elements of Wit is an engaging audiobook that brings together the greatest wits of our time, and previous ones from Oscar Wilde to Nora Ephron, Winston Churchill to Christopher Hitchens, Mae West to Louis CK, and many in between. With chapters covering the essential ingredients of wit, this primer sheds light on how anyone - introverts, extroverts, wallflowers, and bon vivants - can find the right zinger, quip, parry, or retort... or at least be a little bit more interesting.

Critic reviews

Elements of Wit promises to teach the wit-deprived hordes how to become modern-day Oscar Wildes and Dorothy Parker… An entertaining book..." ( The Wall Street Journal)

Surprisingly witless for a book about wit. You'd think a book like this wouldn't be boring...it is

really not that great.....at all

I did like the audio version of this book, but I think a physical or ebook format would be easier to reference in the future, because I definitely will want to reference certain parts. This is a great springboard book, in that it suggests many other books that expand upon the concepts mentioned here. Overall, I'd definitely say this is a good read for beginning writers and the like.

A very interesting guide, but...

Nothing to learn here. I didn't find it useful and would not recommend spending your time on this.

A collection of admiration stories

The combination of “elements” in this book gives those pursuing the sharp tongue a better lick on the puzzle of being funny on the fly. Great narrator too!

Great book and a very rare study

This book really exceeded my expectations. It explores the lost art of wit. And no-wit doesn't mean just being funny -it's more about how to have interesting things to say instantly, on the spot, not 10 minutes later when the moment has passed. It's the only book I have found that covers this topic so deeply. Loved it!!

Full of meaty information and historical references!

sucks I paid 13 bucks for the world's longest definition of a word. this book doesn't help with new zingers or metaphors and the little quizzes at the end of the chapters are completely pointless.

title does not fit the material

This book is supposed to be a book about “how to be more witty” but is just one bio after another of witty people.

Misleading

complete rambling not making much sense at all but just carrying on with his words talkin and talkin and talkin trying to set a time that makes no sense at all it's just run on run on run on ridiculous

pure garbage

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

this has quizzes and is very frustrating. might be ok in the written book but not here. it says mastering the art of being interesting but I did not find it.

NO! quizzes? maybe in the written word
