Ya habían venido y seguirían viniendo, contratados en su mayoría por Felipe II, otros pintores, como Cincinato, Cambiaso, Zuccaro, II Tibaldi, etcétera, pero eran todos artistas de segunda fila, como ocurriría luego en el siglo XVII. El Greco es, en cambio, un personaje de talla incomparable e imprevisible. Se ha dicho muchas veces que a pesar de su ascendencia cretense, el Greco tiene más de veneciano y de español, porque fue en estos países donde realizó su tarea pictórica, su formación como pintor.
