About this listen
There’s a place in Texas the locals avoid at all cost, where the lost go missing and the damned reside.
You won’t find it on any map. There are no road signs to guide you, and once there, may God have mercy on your soul.
For when the scarecrow awakens, the harvest of the living begins.
Welcome to Donn, TX
Gateway to Hell
1969
Frank is back from Vietnam, but struggling to reconnect with the world he once knew. Jane is convinced a road trip to Houston will help them both find the connection they are missing. First, they need to drop off her younger sister and her best friend at the university, and then the honeymoon the war put on hold can finally begin.
Except now they are lost on the back roads, and each mile brings them closer to Donn. If only they hadn’t exited the highway....
But now, it’s too late; for the harvest is nearing its end, and the scarecrow requires its due.

It’s the mid-'90s. Grunge and flannel are fading as the Spice Girls and Hot Topic conquer the malls. Cherry gloss glistens on the lips of the youth. Modems hiss as America comes online. And in a fog-drenched cove at the edge of New England, something terrible awakens when a fisherman reels in a gruesome catch: the remains of a young woman. Remains still pulsing with furious life.

Story
When we arrived at the compound, we believed we had found our safe haven at last. For the briefest of moments, their medicine and science lulled us into a false sense of security. But within the bowels of this haven, where the cure for Nevermore is being developed, there lurks an evil that is far worse than anything we've already encountered. Sebastian is used as a test subject, a process that, instead of curing him, is slowly killing him. As his heart falters, mine must draw upon new strength if I am to fight our way out of the compound.

In a steel-and-lead-encased bunker 20 feet below the basement level of his house, a soldier waits for his final orders. On the surface, a plague ravages the planet, infecting over 90% of the populace. The bacterium burrows through the brain, destroying all signs of humanity and leaving behind little more than base, prehistoric instincts. The infected turn into hyper-aggressive predators, with an insatiable desire to kill and feed. Someday soon, the soldier will have to open the hatch to his bunker, and step out into this new wasteland, to complete his mission....

We've all seen them - the stubborn tail-gater who follows too close, for too long...the wild driver who weaves through lanes on a crowded highway...the driver who causes accidents but is never a victim of one. These are the jackals, hunters who follow the nation's highways and byways, preying on the weak and unsuspecting. Jim Scott's been hunting jackals for some time now. They took someone he loved, once, and he's never forgiven them. And Jim doesn't fight alone.

Creepy and well narrated
This book checks all the boxes. Supernatural creepies, a bit of a slasher story with an ending that will surprise you.
I'm drawn into the story from the first book in the series and I look forward to continuing my visit to Donn, TX.
I did read this first and decided to check out the audio version and the narrator is excellent.

Short and not-so-sweet...
Short and not-so-sweet, this was a cool short story about a family stopping in the wrong area on a trip. It's too short to give up much else, just know it goes zero to 60 pretty fast, and it doesn't pull any punches.
