Sheila Pinelli needed to be taken out.
Former cop turned private investigator Cole McGinnis never considered committing murder. But six months ago, when Jae-Min's blood filled his hands and death came knocking at his lover's door, killing Sheila Pinelli became a definite possibility.
While Sheila lurks in some hidden corner of Los Angeles, Jae and Cole share a bed, a home, and most of all, happiness. They'd survived Jae's traditional Korean family disowning him and plan on building a new life - preferably one without the threat of Sheila's return hanging over them.
Thanks to the Santa Monica police mistakenly releasing Sheila following a loitering arrest, Cole finally gets a lead on Sheila's whereabouts. That is, until the trail goes crazy, and he's thrown into a tangle of drugs, exotic women, and more death. Regardless of the case going sideways, Cole is determined to find the woman he once loved as a sister and get her out of their lives once and for all.

This is probably my least favourite book in the series, the hunt for Sheila got to be a bit much at times, it overshadowed the rest of the book. In a way it's fitting as Cole is obsessed with finding her, to the point where he ignores everything and everyone else. That being said, I'm still on Jae side and want Cole to just let it go, just a little bit.
There are things that I love about this book. I love how Cole and Ichi are growing closer, how they behave more like brothers as they learn more about each other and spend more time together. Also Cole and Jae do grow closer, with each book their relationships gets more and more solid, it strengthens, and I'm so happy to be along for the ride.
Greg Tremblay is amazing; his narration of this book was amazing, flawless really. There's not a single character that don't have their own voice, have their personality shine through his words. He never misses a single line, let alone a single word. Tremblay delivers, and he delivers every single time. If there is a magical voice out there, he sure has it.
While this might be my least favourite book in the series, I still loved listening to it and I know that I will listen to it again. However, now I'm going to dive headfirst into Bobby and Ichi's story, because that will be a fun ride!

We learn a lot more about the back story of Rick, Ben and Sheila and finally begin to see what might have been happening to cause the total break down that ended with Ben’s shooting Rick and himself.
Cole and Jae’s relationship gets deeper and more solidified. This is a far more sentimental book than the previous in the series. Cole spends a lot of time adoring Jae and it is so very sweet.
Ichi’s character gets more fleshed out and we get tantalized at the end by the prospect of him being a more central character in the future.
The “mystery” is pretty straight forward, but we gain a lot of back story about Ben and Sheila and Rick, so that was great.
Audio:
Greg Tremblay narrates this entire series so he knows these characters well and, having spoken to him on Facebook, I know he’s more than a little invested in their stories as well. His voice ripples with emotion as he narrates the heated emotional scenes and his flat, self-deprecating version of Cole’s standard speaking voice is spot on. He manages the difficult task of differentiating Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese accents interspersed with Cole’s flat American accent.
This is definitely a narration of “acting” out the story and, as I have said before, it takes Rhys’ sensuous writing and turns it to an almost voyeuristic experience. Someone said “It’s like listening to a movie soundtrack of the book” and I completely agree.
He does another amazing job, clearly comfortable and his element with this very poetic and passionate story.
I highly recommend this story and this narration.
I give it 6 of 5 stars – amazing!
