Il s'appelait Deshoulières, et il le regrettait. Il avait tort ; car c'est sans doute à l'horreur de ce nom et des banalités qu'il rappelle, que Deshoulières dut sa passion singulière pour l'originalité. Or, comme original, il fut complet et rare. Après avoir touché un peu à tout, aux arts, aux lettres, aux plaisirs, il en était arrivé à se créer un idéal qui consistait à chercher en tout l'imprévu.
Au premier abord, cela ne paraît pas bizarre, et cette théorie semble indiquer seulement un esprit curieux, ennemi du commun, désireux du nouveau, comme sont les véritables créateurs. Mais l'étrangeté commençait en ceci, que Deshoulières avait fait de cette théorie la règle de sa conduite journalière, et la pratiquait dans le commerce du monde, où il la poussait jusqu'aux derniers confins de l'excentrique.
