Eigentlich hatte der Gefreite Josef Brosik gehofft, endlich in Urlaub gehen zu können, stattdessen wird er zu einer neu aufgestellten Einheit versetzt. Vom eher geruhsamen Besatzungsdienst in Frankreich geht es in die Hölle der Ostfront. Schon bei der ersten Feindberührung wird fast das ganze Regiment vernichtet; Brosik gehört zu den wenigen Überlebenden. In der Folgezeit wird er Meldegänger - eine zwar bevorzugte, doch harte Aufgabe. Sie führt dazu, dass Brosik viele Einheiten und Offiziere kennenlernt und über die Zustände an der Ostfront wesentlich mehr weiß als seine Kameraden. Da er Russisch kann, weiß er bald auch recht gut darüber Bescheid, was die Zivilbevölkerung und die russischen Soldaten denken.
