Es war ein kühner Plan, den Kaiser Karl V. im Jahr 1532 fasste: eine künstliche Wasserstraße zwischen Atlantischem und Pazifischem Ozean. Doch es sollte noch fast 400 Jahre dauern, bis das Mammutprojekt in die Tat umgesetzt werden konnte. Dabei forderte der wilde, von dichtem Regenwald überwucherte Landstrich einen hohen Tribut. Tausende Menschen ließen ihr Leben, bevor am 15. August 1914 die ersten Schiffe den Kanal passieren konnten.
