Jesus kehrt zu den Menschen zurück und das zur Zeit der spanischen Inquisition. Er trifft dort auf den greisen Großinquisitor, der ihn zum Tod auf dem Scheiterhaufen verurteilen will. Der Großinquisitor verhört den Gefangenen, wenn er ihn auch dabei kein Wort sprechen lässt. Er wirft Jesus vor, er habe seine Kirche im Stich gelassen. Ohne Klerus wäre die Menschheit nicht lebensfähig. Freiheit, so der alternde Mann, sei nicht in der Natur des Menschen verankert, sie würde nur Chaos verursachen. Menschen brauchen Hirten, denn sie sind wie Schafe und so müssen eben jene Kardinäle und Inquisitoren die schwere Bürde auf sich nehmen, über die Menschen zu richten.
