 Ein anonymer Erzähler träumt von allerlei wunderlichen Ereignissen. Athanasius Pernath ist sein Name, er lebt als Gemmenschneider im jüdischen Getto von Prag und nach dem Besuch eines mysteriösen Auftraggebers gerät sein Leben aus den Fugen. Er nimmt an, der Besucher könne eine alte sagenhafte Gestalt - der Golem - gewesen sein, ein aus Lehm geschaffener Gehilfe, der die Juden beschützen sollte.

Athanasius Pernath wird in zahlreiche Intrigen verwickelt und von Halluzinationen und Wahnvorstellungen heimgesucht. Durch ein Komplott des Trödlers Aaron Wasserturm gerät er unter Mordverdacht, muss ins Gefängnis, wo er dahinsiecht und alle Hoffnung aufgibt, bis er unerwartet entlassen wird und mit ansehen muss, wie das Getto abgerissen wird. Seine Freunde von einst sucht er vergebens, bis er schließlich abstürzt - und erwacht, um festzustellen, dass er keine Stunde geschlafen hat. Doch können all seine Erlebnisse wirklich nur ein Traum gewesen sein?
