 Captain Jacques Junet was quite comfortable with the current workload. His requirements were all being met and he was pondering an early retirement, somewhere green, on the Earth. The deep-space tow vessel, the Havelock and her rag-tag crew of professionals were making a living in the Deep Range, servicing the fleet of ChronosCom Corporation's shipping craft (trucks) out to the belt and back. But when orders come down from corporate requiring his compliance to complete an urgent recovery, Jacques is persuaded to put his plans on-hold.

Unbeknownst to them all, the job would lead the Havelock onto a path none of them would be willing to go on; forced to do things they never thought they would do, and all prompted by both a revolutionary discovery and a dubious piece of illegal technology.
