About this listen

Returning from a disappointing foreign holiday, police constable Hamish Macbeth is worried. He learns that a newcomer, Catriona Beldame, is regarded as a witch and various men have been seen visiting her. Hamish himself is charmed by her until he finds out that she has been supplying dangerous potions. At first the villagers won't listen to him, saying that the loveless Hamish has turned against all women.

When Beldame is found murdered and her home set ablaze, he must clear his own name and then work to solve yet another murder to bring peace and quiet back to his beloved village. His investigations are complicated by a romance with a female forensic expert. Perhaps the Scotish Highlands' most stubborn bachelor will get married at last!

Always fun!

These stories are always fun with the mixture of different characters. For someone enjoying the series, the familiar residents offer a variety of personalities. A pleasant break to visit.

Round and Around We Go

I love these books. But I’m dizzy with the back-and-forth and round and round of Hamish and Priscilla. And I wish I wish Elsbeth would just go away.

Lots of Twists and Turns

Plots and subplots and finally some joy for Hamish. All in all, a satisfying read.

Too many sixth senses and stupid decisions

Too many sixth senses and stupid unlikely decisions in this volume. Too easy. Too many murders and nothing in the outcome to knock your socks off.

This series is never very intelligent or believable. I keep listening to more because it's set in the Scottish Highlands, and inertia. But it doesn't do much in describing the scenery of winter or summer. You can probably find other books with more vivid scenes. It doesn't describe much about the food either. Just average writing with occasionally good lines, average storyline, same ol stories.

Amazing story

Superb as always! I am a mystery reader from a young age. Started with Agatha Christie. I must say that Hamish Macbeth is currently my favorite character of all time!

Back door!

I came to this series via this book, which happens to be the back door (# 25 in the Hamish Macbeth series. Enjoyable characters, but it is clear that there are established relationships that you don't have the background on. I enjoyed this one enough to try and track down more of this series. The narrator was a good choice for this book.

A fun read!

Hamish is a great character that can, at times, be charming, impish... even romantic and touching... but always makes me laugh out loud! Characters that make me sad to come to the end of a story, but glad that is a series so there is more to come!

A witch!

Another great addition to this fabulous series! A “witch” invades and everything goes nuts! An interesting journey. Excellent narrator!

The narrator really makes the story

As I've said before, Mr. Malcolm IS, repeat, IS Hamish MacBeth. And the character of MacBeth makes even a less than spectacular story worth my anticipation.

Pub. Summary Wrong

Apparently the publisher read a different version of this story! This one was much better.
