About this listen

Read by Paul McGann, ‘Dear Olly’ was written by Michael Morpurgo in 2000.
A stunning performance and narrative.

Ollie’s brother wants to go and work with children who have been made orphans, through war, in Africa. He wants to be a clown and make them laugh. His mother and sister want him to stay in England and go to university.

Hero, a swallow, has a journey to make too. He must fly to Africa for the winter to join all the other swallows. His journey is difficult and fraught with danger.

Three separate stories are woven into one powerful and moving novel whose central theme exposes the horrors of war and of landmines, but also the endurance of the human spirit.

The story was a good reminder how laughter can heal the unseen wounds and finding your purpose can bring strength to overcome.

A very sweet and touching story. Keep a box of Kleenexes nearby just in case. Paul McGann is a joy to listen to, as usual.

wonderful story of love and self-sacrifice, and coming of age of a young man trying to find his place in the world. then his love for his sister and their interest in things that are bigger than they are in the world. I liked the park of the swallow namehero and his journey to Africa. a very good book for children in there early teens. teaches many lessons of how to care for those that are around us and how to lift and improve the world which we live in. instead of just speaking money and Glory. Michael morpurgo is a wonderful author of many touching stories that is very worthwhile. warhorse being his most famous, but many of his other books are worthwhile.

Touching story of self sacrifice
