Mary-Louise Parker
About this listen
2017 Audie Award Finalist for Narration by the Author
A wonderfully unconventional literary debut from the award-winning actress Mary-Louise Parker.
An extraordinary literary work, Dear Mr. You renders the singular arc of a woman's life through letters Mary-Louise Parker composes to the men, real and hypothetical, who have informed the person she is today. Beginning with the grandfather she never knew, the letters range from a missive to the beloved priest from her childhood to remembrances of former lovers to an homage to a firefighter she encountered to a heartfelt communication with the uncle of the infant daughter she adopted. Listeners will be amazed by the depth and style of these letters, which reveal the complexity and power to be found in relationships both loving and fraught.

My name is Betty. I have depression. I have passion. I have tits the size of printers. And also: I have a brain full of women. There’s Blanche VonF--kery, Ingrid St. Rash, and a host of others—some cowering in sweatpants, some howling plans for revolution, and one, oh God, and one . . . slowly vomiting up a crow? Worried for her. These women take turns at the wheel. That’s why I feel like a million selves. With a raised eyebrow and a soul-scalpel, I’d like to tell you how I got this way. Because maybe you feel this way too.

"If, on an early summer’s night, you wanted to kill a man, how would you do it? Would you lay a trap, sharpen a dagger, uncork a poison? Personally, I’ve always leaned toward the dramatic. But looking back, I wonder now if the events of last summer didn’t begin with a quieter sort of murder." So ponders Alexandra James, a beautiful, driven, yet troubled New England Chronicle reporter. She is assigned to cover the death of Thom Carlyle, son of one of the most powerful men in Washington. Just back from a year abroad, Thom falls from the top of a Harvard bell tower on a warm summer night.

So many feels in this book
Mary Louise Parker takes you on a tour of how her life was shaped. She rivets you and often makes you feel like you are right beside her sitting on the porch as she regales you with stories of these men. She is the girlfriend I yearn for that shares secrets that you share without revealing names. You laugh just as easily as you cry with her, and at times you just want to give her a big hug. amazing read.

It's like a diary. steamy in some parts and I don't agree a man with a woman before marriage although the steamy should be part of a marriage. Enjoyed her capturing different times and folks in her life.

You know this is going to be good
I'll admit to being a fanboy of Ms. Parker long before Weeds. At least back to Fried Green Tomatoes and that's 25 years ago! So even though I'm just about done with my celebrity autobiography binge, I had to get this one. And I'm glad I did. Of course, she narrates it herself. So one at least gets the impression they really are meeting Mary-Louise.
The book is setup as a collection of letters to men in her life. I'm guessing NOT every man in her life. But this book definitely gets me thinking - "If I had met her at some point in her life, would I be in this book?" I'm egotistical enough to think maybe. Probably not. Unless ...

Mary-Louise has elevated the form!
I was in the same freshman drama class as ML, so to read her account of those days and people was to relive them with a sensitive clarity I never could have done even in real time. What astonishes me most though is the way she uses her poetic voice to render a life that is by turns fragile, humble, angry, lovely, loving, triumphant and most of all fierce, girl! We the reader have no choice but to confront, then know and then finally love ourselves more deeply…if only to ape the love bursting to escape from a heart as large as hers. Each chapter/letter left me in tears. What kept me going was the promise that in reading further I’d invariably laugh loudly enough to disturb my subway neighbors and next have my breath deftly stolen by unimaginably gorgeous word choice. I need a moment to stop tingling but I cannot wait to reread this poignant affirmation of life!
