About this listen

A prison doctor injects a condemned serial killer with a formula designed to keep his consciousness awake while his body rots in the grave. But all drugs have unforeseen side-effects. Before he can be buried, the killer wakes up. Hungry. Infected. Contagious. This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang… but a bite.

Very Mayberry!

I really enjoyed this book. If you're a Mayberry fan, you will, too. Hoping there will be a follow up.

Small Town Deputy Meets National Guard

What did you love best about Dead of Night?

The main character is a female sheriffs deputy who with her partner takes on the dead and the National Guard to save members of her community.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The ending was typical in that it abruptly drops off with no clear conclusions.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

I think the narrator could have defined the many characters voices with different tones, accent, etc. I feel it tended to run together and at times I lost interest while listening.

Any additional comments?

Perhaps I should have stopped listening to this book and read it.

Good except...

The book itself was pretty good. Des Fox is a kind of annoying character in my opinion, but others may not think so (I’m not into the whole “badass, rough, raw feminist” types of characters but that’s just me). The narrator though just got to me. I assume there are other books in this series because of the way it ended but I’m not sure I can listen to them just because of him. I kept thinking of that episode of spongebob where squidward is telling the story of the hash-slinging slasher (if you don’t know what I’m talking about, go YouTube it haha). It just sounded like an overly dramatic horror story with his inflection in a lot of it.

Don't listen to the would be zombie novelist who commented

Don't listen to the angry would be writers comment. It almost convinced me not to buy this book by misleading me on the idea that this is another "smart zombie" book it's not. It's a terrify story of a mad carrier and people trapped in their own bodies watching themselves devour their children and force the pain of living death onto everyone who loved them too much to put them down without hesitation. Give this book a chance it's truly a chilling novel.

Listen to sample first!

Could not get over the narration. It's over the top, way way way too much.

Gaaagghhh!!OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD!!! etc.

This is my second time through Dead Of Night. Zombie fiction is like literary comfort food for me and I consume a lot of it. I held off on Dead Of Night because of the fair number of folks who hate the narration. First time around I was in agreement that it was annoying and overblown. Second time I had the epiphany that this was a cheesy audio graphic novel and I embraced the narrative style and enjoyed myself quite a bit. It’s not my favorite zombie story(that honor goes to The Reapers Are The Angels by Aiden Bell), but this is miles ahead and far more fun than a lot of the dreck that’s out there. I’m glad I embraced it. Now for the next in the series.

Narration of vision

The narrator, voice of this story, absolutely brings it all to life. The vivid descriptions written by the author absolutely come to light in your minds eye and makes you see the world unfold in front of you. I absolutely recommend for anyone interested in a zombie novel.
