 Ich bin, es ist - worin liegt da der Unterschied? Sicher nicht nur in der korrekten Konjugation, solange es nach Sigmund Freud geht. Ein Trieb muss, erst einmal wahrgenommen, auch zu beherrschen sein, ein Es existiert zunächst für sich allein, bis es durch die Einwirkungen der Außenwelt zu seinem Ich gedeihen kann. Kontrollierte Wahrnehmungen und eine ausgefeilte, streng überwachte Motorik tragen dazu bei, dass keinen Schaden nimmt, was sich in der Realität beweisen soll.

Da wird noch längst nicht alles durchgelassen, damit aus dem wachsenden Ich etwas werden kann, das viel Mitgegebenes verinnerlicht. Dort kommt es zu Konflikten im Kampf zwischen Eigenem und Übernommenem, Aggressionen entstehen und Schuldgefühle. Was dabei eher unbewusst geschieht, blieb in der Folgezeit umstritten. Bei Freud verdrängt zunächst das Bewusstsein jenes, was daraufhin eher unterschwellig, aber umso massiver belastet. Seine ursprüngliche Auffassung hat er jedoch selbst revidiert.
