 Aristoteles (384-322 v. Chr.), der Schüler Platons und Erzieher Alexanders des Großen, gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Philosophen überhaupt.
In seiner "Metaphysik" befasst Aristoteles sich mit dem Begriff, den Prinzipien und dem Wesen der Dinge (Substanzen) "hinter der Natur". Metaphysik als Erste Philosophie oder Grundwissenschaft behandelt das, was alle Wissenschaften voraussetzen, aber von ihnen selbst nicht erfasst wird.
Im berühmten 12. Kapitel der "Metaphysik" erörtert Aristoteles die Prinzipien der sinnlichen Substanzen und das absolute Prinzip. In Auseinandersetzung mit den vorsokratischen Philosophen und insbesondere mit Platon zeigt Aristoteles u.a. die Unzulänglichkeit der platonischen Ideenlehre auf.
