Story
No one is more familiar with Savannah's dark side than homicide detective and native resident Elise Sandburg. She's been haunted for years by her own mysterious past: She was abandoned as a baby in one of the city's ancient cemeteries, and it’s rumored that she is the illegitimate daughter of an infamous Savannah witch doctor. The local Gullah culture of voodoo and magic is one that few outsiders can understand, least of all Elise’s new partner.

Every crime scene has a smell. A look. A trail of DNA. It also has a feel. A lingering residue that floats unseen, like bacteria in the air, just waiting to be absorbed. To be felt. To be interpreted. And the man and the boy are the only ones who know this. Veteran major crimes detective Kate Messenger has a problem on her hands: six bodies - father, mother, three children, and the family dog - all slaughtered in their own home, with not a single clue or a shred of DNA that points to the butcher who killed them.

There's something out there in the dark. There's always something watching. There's always something reaching for you. Always. And sometimes there?s someone you can call. Someone you can hire. Someone who knows these dark streets and back alleys. Someone who knows how things work in this part of town. Private eyes who are often as dark as the things they hunt. Investigators who know how to look in the shadows for the things that go bump. Good guys but not always nice guys. Hardboiled Horror collects fifteen original tales of noir mystery shot through with elements of horror and the supernatural.

Drake's on the case again in a fast moving story
What did you love best about Darkness Unbound?
It's a page turner - Once again Glenn Porzig movies you from scene to scene. In a nostalgic vein (no pun intended) this is a modern day Kolchak:Night Stalker series to a baby boomer like myself.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Alexander Drake. The therapy/evaluation scene opens us up to Drake's imperfections and impatience, but also his desire to go on living.
What does Brinke Stevens bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The whole series has been given a coat of gravitas by having actor Brinke Stevens guide us through. Her slightest nuances place her from male to female characters. Voice artistry is a given with Stevens unique vocal touch and she provides a smooth yet exciting ride through Drake's adventures.

Keeps getting better!
In the third installment of the Darkness Unbound series, the author's voice and method of storytelling have improved even more, and the narrator's tones and characterizations have improved as well. While I was still taken out of the story by certain pronunciations (like "approociate" for appreciate), it's clear that Stevens reads ahead before recording, which is something all good narrators should do, lest they speak a character's line in the wrong voice. She handled this switching back and forth well, and again tackled accents with ease. I still appreciate her way of yelling without yelling, as well. Thanks for not deafening me. 😉
The characters in this third installment were, dare I say, even more fleshed out and memorable than in the other books, and I especially loved the fact that one of the characters was an author. It's fun when authors write about authors, because, even when they aren't the main character, I can see little pieces of the author in them - their dreams, their struggles, their accomplishments - and being an author myself, I can't help but relate to them. I also loved the return of a certain ghost hunting group (and the mention of PRS!) - and all the wonderful jabs that brings. These books are dark, but they certainly are not devoid of humor!
By the time I reached the end (with a smile on my face, thanks to a certain guest appearance or two), I was sad that it was over. But my smile returned when the preview for book 4 started. I was worried Porzig would stop at 3 books, but apparently the saga will continue. I can't wait to see what happens next. This series keeps getting better!

The series continues strong
Glenn Porzig’s story telling continues to evolve in his 3rd novel in the Darkness Unbound series, Shadow of Death. From a shootout to a ghost hunt gone wrong, the action never stops up to the book’s startling conclusion. Brinke Stevens continues to impress in bringing the characters to life.
