About this listen
A clinical psychiatrist explores the effects of DMT, one of the most powerful psychedelics known.
- A behind-the-scenes look at the cutting edge of psychedelic research.
- Provides a unique scientific explanation for the phenomenon of alien abduction experiences.
From 1990 to 1995 Dr. Rick Strassman conducted U.S. Government-approved and funded clinical research at the University of New Mexico in which he injected 60 volunteers with DMT, one of the most powerful psychedelics known. His detailed account of those sessions is an extraordinarily riveting inquiry into the nature of the human mind and the therapeutic potential of psychedelics. DMT, a plant-derived chemical found in the psychedelic Amazon brew, ayahuasca, is also manufactured by the human brain. In Strassman's volunteers, it consistently produced near-death and mystical experiences. Many reported convincing encounters with intelligent nonhuman presences, aliens, angels, and spirits. Nearly all felt that the sessions were among the most profound experiences of their lives.
Strassman's research connects DMT with the pineal gland, considered by Hindus to be the site of the seventh chakra and by Rene Descartes to be the seat of the soul. DMT: The Spirit Molecule makes the bold case that DMT, naturally released by the pineal gland, facilitates the soul's movement in and out of the body and is an integral part of the birth and death experiences, as well as the highest states of meditation and even sexual transcendence. Strassman also believes that "alien abduction experiences" are brought on by accidental releases of DMT. If used wisely, DMT could trigger a period of remarkable progress in the scientific exploration of the most mystical regions of the human mind and soul.

Story
Less than 50,000 years ago mankind had no art, no religion, no sophisticated symbolism, no innovative thinking. Then, in a dramatic and electrifying change, described by scientists as "the greatest riddle in human history," all the skills and qualities that we value most highly in ourselves appeared already fully formed, as though bestowed on us by hidden powers. In Visionary, Graham Hancock sets out to investigate this mysterious "before-and-after moment" and to discover the truth about the influences that gave birth to modern human mind.

Story
Found throughout the plant and animal kingdom, DMT (dimethyltryptamine) is also naturally occurring in humans, and may be released during near-death and actual death experiences, earning it the title “the spirit molecule.” When taken as a psychedelic, either via ayahuasca or in pure form, DMT is experientially considered to be one of the strongest and strangest of all entheogens. The majority of high-dose users report visions of unknown yet curiously familiar alien worlds and encounters with sentient nonhuman presences.

But upon discovering how these remarkable substances are improving the lives not only of the mentally ill but also of healthy people coming to grips with the challenges of everyday life, he decided to explore the landscape of the mind in the first person as well as the third.

We are in the midst of a powerful psychedelic renaissance. After four decades of hibernation, the promise of the psychoactive 60s - that deeper self-awareness, achieved through reality-bending substances and practices, will lead to greater external harmony - is again gaining a major following. The signs are everywhere, from the influence of today's preeminent psychedelic thinker Daniel Pinchbeck, to the renewed interest in the legacy of Terence McKenna, and to the upsurge of collective cultural phenomena like the spectacle of Burning Man.

Story
The secretive Mysteries conducted at Eleusis in Greece for nearly two millennia have long puzzled scholars with strange accounts of initiates experiencing otherworldly journeys. In this groundbreaking work, three experts - a mycologist, a chemist, and a historian - argue persuasively that the sacred potion given to participants in the course of the ritual contained a psychoactive entheogen. The authors then expand the discussion to show that natural psychedelic agents have been used in spiritual rituals across history and cultures.

How and why are these experiences different from or similar to one another? Are they meaningful? And what do we do with them after they have passed? Butler’s DMT Field Guide: A Brief History, Step-by-Step Recipes, and Personal Experiences From a DMT Saturated Consciousness summarizes the author’s life-saving and transformational journey after using DMT hundreds of times for medicinal, meditative, and spiritual purposes. His research into the history, recipes, and usage of DMT helps bridge the gap between what has been uncovered from the structured scientific studies, with the knowledge that has been gleaned from real world DMT sessions.

Transcribed from the original lectures recorded at San Francisco State University in 1987, The Nature of Drugs series highlights Shulgin’s engaging lecture style peppered with illuminating anecdotes and amusing asides. Ostensibly taught as an introductory course on drugs and biochemistry, these books serve as both a historical record of Shulgin’s teaching style and the culmination of his philosophy on drugs, psychopharmacology, states of consciousness, and societal and individual freedoms pertaining to their use, both medicinal and exploratory.

Story
Where PiHKAL focuses on a class of compounds called phenethylamines, TiHKAL is written about a family of psychoactive drugs known as tryptamines with TiHKAL being an acronym for Tryptamines I Have Known and Loved”. Like its predecessor, this book is divided into two parts. The first part of the book begins with the story of Alice and Shura, a fictionalized autobiography, which picks up where the similar section of PiHKAL left off. The book opens with the story about the DEA raid that occurred a few years after the publication of their first book, PiHKAL.

Story
Terence McKenna hypothesizes that as the North African jungles receded, giving way to savannas and grasslands near the end of the most recent ice age, a branch of our arboreal primate ancestors left the forest canopy and began living in the open areas beyond. There they experimented with new varieties of foods as they adapted, physically and mentally, to the environment. Among the new foods found in this environment were psilocybin-containing mushrooms.

Wow
I cannot believe what I heard. Listened mostly on 1.3x speed. Was a wonderful listen and incredibly thorough and obviously honest. He’s of course biased in his own subjective opinion, but I believe there are reasonable assumptions made in this book that should be considered a mix between a case-study review and a first-person narrative of the experiences throughout his research career in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

One of the most important books ever made.
This is a must for any human being who is lost, confused or scared of death. The book brings you an understanding of the human mind and an aspect rarely seen. It brings everything from religion to science to philosophy to basic human emotion. Whether or not you agree with the book it will nonetheless open your eyes to a beautiful side of human existence.

Great story, but low quality audio
Very insightful content, however the narration sounded very generic and the audio compression or recording quality was quite low. Like listening on an AM radio band.

Educational & fascinating
Wonderful book, I particularly enjoyed the information on the brain & its operations. I found it much more than a book about DMT, its details on brain function & eloquent way of sharing this incredible study was excellent.
I really enjoyed the narration - I found it well suited to the medical subject matter. You can always play at 1.2 times for an easier listen.
Loved it, brilliant book. Thanks for the research!

Magical
This was resound, moving and just utterly unimaginable. The sheer tenacity of Strassman is displayed is his relation of events in the cumulation of, thought process, personal finding of oneself or the pathway to this experiment that he endured. From his college days to performing the experiment itself, gathering the materials and political approval will move you as a human being if you have any leniency toward the psychedelic possibility of expansion on any level. Strassman is a psychedelic warrior. Accounts of the experiment are so descriptive, from his own recall of demonstration to the actual accounts of his participants you are right ~there~ with him. Just utterly amazing, didn’t his theorizing and explanation of what occurred. Strassman is a man unto himself and a revolutionary! Worth every minute. The narration is also quite calming, I might add

I needed to know
Dr. S shared the good, the bad and the ugly. This guide through the detailed study was fascinating and I was on a roller-coaster of emotions the entire time. I can't say that I have come to any actionable conclusions other than to continue my education about psyodelics in general. This book was the first of many and I'm happy I started with clinical trial studies. Thank you for being brave enough to take the first step Dr. S!
