After assisting Iohn to bring about the downfall of Lady Inez and in consequence, the end of any threat to his power, Margarita is brought back from Castle Latoo, where she hovers between life and death, her heart permanently damaged by the poison she was forced to take. Still weak, Margarita has to face he arch enemy, Ruprecht, who arrives in Hexia as the new General. Forced to enter into a humiliating public accord prohibiting, on pain of death, the harming of the General, Margarita believes Iohn has turned against her and sided with her enemies. Defeated, and feeling once again alone in a hostile land, she retreats from Solan, living only in the hope that a Sudkan ship will come for her, but when the Sudkans do arrive, it is not in the form anyone is prepared for, especially as the stated purpose of the delegation is to exact deadly revenge on General Ruprecht.
