About this listen

As a girl and as part of an ethnic minority in Afghanistan, Freshta Tori Jan was persecuted relentlessly. Her family faced kidnappings and daily murder attempts on the bus, on the way to school, in the workplace, and beyond. Freshta’s school was shut down by the Taliban, and many of her friends were murdered and shot. Her journey through poverty, terrorism, and other forms of injustice has enabled her to be a voice for those unable to share their stories and those unable to receive the opportunities she has sought. She believes in empowering youth in order to bring about change and to be the leaders of today and tomorrow.

With a voice that is both accessible and engaging, Freshta brings forward a captivating first-person account of strength, resilience, and determination, delivering compelling narrative nonfiction by young people, for young people.

This is not just any account of resilience through adversity. This is an account of a truly awe-inspiring woman. I went to the school in Bullard, TX with Freshta. I remember when some of the events in this story happened. I also remember marveling at how dedicated she was to her education and advocacy, despite her experiences, loss, and ongoing fear for her family and friends back home. I do not make friends easily, but Freshta was one of the friendliest people at the school. I am honored that I know her and that she made an effort to be a friend to me. Despite her experiences, she was kind, generous, and incredibly truely brave. This short snippet of her life is inspirational - but also SO much more. It's a testament of courage, inhuman determination, and incredible STRENGTH. Terrorism, abuse, incredible adversity and loss could not take the courage, kindness, and love from Freshta.

An unembellished record of an invaluable woman
