About this listen
Anyone for a bit of high magic, swordfighting, and a taste of what Scotland was like before perfect teeth, nice hair, and clean kilts became the order of the day in Outlander? My Scottish sorcerer and swordsman, Augustus Seton, lives in Stirling in the late 16th century, and is usually in the service of the king, fighting the good fight against the dark things of the world in between the drinking and wenching.
Over the years, I've written many stories set in my native country, the Watchers series in particular. That series was written 20 years ago now, and ever since I've been itching to write some more historical fantasy set in Scotland.
I toyed with several ideas, but it took the death of two of my favorite writers to give me a kick. David Gemmell's muscular swordplay and Robert Holdstock's grip on mythic archetypes and the importance of history mixed in my head and gave me a sword-for-hire in 16th century Scotland.
The late 1590s were a time of turmoil. Scotland was on the verge of many changes that would shape its future, from religious reformation, to the union of the crowns with England. But in many ways, the country was still rooted in its medieval past, and fear of witches and demons was still a large part of everyday life. Seton confronts demons, both internal and external, as he wanders on the fringes of history.

Story
It’s the mid-'90s. Grunge and flannel are fading as the Spice Girls and Hot Topic conquer the malls. Cherry gloss glistens on the lips of the youth. Modems hiss as America comes online. And in a fog-drenched cove at the edge of New England, something terrible awakens when a fisherman reels in a gruesome catch: the remains of a young woman. Remains still pulsing with furious life.

Story
Long ago, the world fell into twilight, when the great empires of old consumed each other in sorcerous cataclysms. In the south, the Star Towers fell, swallowed by the sea, while the black glaciers descended upon the northern holdfasts, entombing the cities of Min-Ceruth in ice and sorcery. Then from the ancient empire of Menekar, the paladins of Ama came, putting every surviving sorcerer to the sword and cleansing their taint from the land. The pulse of magic slowed, fading like the heartbeat of a dying man. But after a thousand years, it has begun to quicken again.

Went in blind
I was given this story in exchange for honest review. And other than knowing it was supposed to be Scottish horror folklore I knew nothing about the story. I wanted to go in with no expectations and just listen to the story as it played out. Lol since I didn’t read the description I actually kept picturing the story taking place in more present time. But it worked just as well for the story. I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it and the narrator’s accent was excellent as well. Gotta love Scottish accent. This was my first time reading/listening to this author, but I will definitely be checking out more of his work in the future.
