About this listen

When paramedics find a malnourished six-year-old boy near a burning car that holds a dead woman, they wonder who he is - and why he won't speak. From the New York Times best-selling author of The Mountain Between Us comes a story of self-discovery, healing, and hope.

On a stifling summer day, an old Chevy Impala ignored the warning signals and was annihilated by the oncoming train. What no one realized until much later was that the driver had paused just before entering the tracks and kicked a small boy out of the car. A small boy with broken glasses who is clutching a notebook with all his might...but who never speaks.

Chase Walker was one of the lucky ones. He was in foster care as a child, but he finally ended up with a family who loved him and cared for him. Now, as a journalist for the local paper, he’s moved on and put the past behind him. But when he’s assigned the story of this young boy, painful, haunting questions about his own childhood begin to rise to the surface.

And as Chase Walker discovers, learning the truth about who you are can be as elusive - and as magical - as chasing fireflies on a summer night.

This was my first introduction to the writings of Charles Martin and now I’m eager to read his other titles. The characters are exceptionally formed and the story tugs on heartstrings big time! Also, I loved the narrator! Best narration I’ve experienced on Audible so far!

Narration and story are excellent!

The prologue was gruesome and difficult to get through. I almost stopped the book right then, but I’m glad I didn’t.
If abuse is a trigger for you, i’d skip the prologue altogether.

Now that that is discussed this book is excellent, I smiled, I cried and the “book” analogy from Tommy is so beautiful and powerful, something I want to remember and quote to my kids.

Im picky about narrators, as a person should be. They can really make or break a book. This narrator was excellent, so easy to listen to. Sort of reminded me of Matthew Mcconaughey.

So in short, keep listening it’s worth it.

Keep listening

I love the word pictures he paints. I can't pinpoint what it is that makes me love his books other than his style. I guess that's who I not a writer. This is the 4th book of his that I've listened to and I just found them last month. I'm not sure how many he has written but I plan to listen to them all.

I have loved every Charles Martin book I have read/listened to. This one is as good if not better. I appreciate Martin’s skillful ability to carefully separate the mired mix of evil and good.

A must-read!
