About this listen
Inviting your ex-spouse for the holidays might not be a good idea. Especially when folks don’t know you were married before.
Carolina quit her job, and for the first time ever, she’s doing the holidays as a stay-at-home mom. And doesn’t all that extra time mean everything will be perfect? Then, the RV showed up. The RV with her parents, their dogs, and their obsession with Gone with the Wind. Then, the college kids showed up.
Their whirlwind left an empty refrigerator, loads of laundry, and a girl. A girl no one seems to know much about. Then, the other grandparents showed up. Hillbilly Hank on his book tour of Southern retirement homes brings his entourage, along with a special kind of marital discord.
While the town of Chancey watches the happenings up on the hill at the B&B, they are also trying to figure out the town’s bank account. Laney is the town’s treasurer, but she’s not answering questions. Missus has ordered 500 fake cardinals for her Christmas Ball. Peter is settling back into his home town and watching the B&B for his own personal reasons. All the secrets aren’t in boxes tied with ribbons and bows.
Family ties come undone with family lies.

Jewel Mantelle has never lived in the South, much less on the coast, so moving from Chicagoland to the historic North Florida coastal town of Sophia Island seems like just the adventure to fix her marriage. However, when she arrives, she finds that it’s awfully hot and humid there and that these Southern folks really like to hug. Her husband’s past on the island includes a creaky old house in the historic district and lots of nosy relatives he’d forgotten to mention.

Behind the curtain of her happy on-screen persona, Valerie Bertinelli’s life has been no easy ride, especially when it comes to her own self-image and self-worth. She waged a war against herself for years, learning to equate her value to her appearance as a child star on One Day at a Time and punishing herself in order to fit into the unachievable Hollywood mold. Story
The Waverleys have always been a curious family, endowed with peculiar gifts that make them outsiders even in their hometown of Bascom, North Carolina. Even their garden has a reputation, famous for its feisty apple tree that bears prophetic fruit, and its edible flowers, imbued with special powers.
Generations of Waverleys tended this garden. Their history was in the soil. But so were their futures.
Together again in the house they grew up in, the Waverley sisters realize they must deal with their common legacy - if they are ever to feel at home in Bascom - or with each other.

doormat and people pleaser
This series is like a train wreck that I can't look away from and need more gore and guts!!! Caro continues to be a people pleaser and doormat for all in her radius. She's moved up from doormat of the year to doormat of the universe.
Often, it is to her detriment. The holiday season
brings out the worst in everyone and secrets come to light. Changes and growth together and apart. I need more of thid train wreck. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a good job.

Great characters and story
I love this series. Received the first and second book in exchange for a review. I am equally as pleased with the second book as I was with the first maybe a bit more. The characters are continuing to develop as is the storyline. I’m a sucker for a series and this
one is great. A nice down home family with a little crazy added in for a bit of flare!!

Book 2 - family dynamics
This is book 2 in Shostak's Chancey series and I am just falling in love with this lil ol southern town and all it's crazy dynamics. In this read we find that skeletons in your closet don't stay there - sometimes they are quick to be reveled and well, sometimes it may take seemingly forever. We also learn that you can't go back...I love this lesson and how well it's displayed in this read / listen. Narration is of course wonderfully done and I love the southern accent which gives this a more authentic feel while listening. Beautifully written, if you love the south and small town drama - you'll love this book and series!

Book 2 is even better!
So, book 2 is even better and we are getting to know the characters a little more. Carolina's internal dialogue is fantastic, especially when it vacillates between what she WANTS to do and what she DOES do. Carolina is the epitome of a passive/aggressive person. (I'm more of a 'Susan' type. lol).
Suzanne Barbetta, with her southern accent, is a PERFECT narrator for Carolina's story in Chancey. She doesn't 'read' the story, she is telling the story as if she is living the story.
I'm loving this series and cannot wait to dig into book 3!

A great continuation of book one. I would reccomend reading book one first. Both books are very good. You can read the synopsis in the description so I will not repeat that information.
I enjoyed the story. Looking forward to book 3!

Here come the In-Laws
This audiobook was provided to me for an honest review.
My worst nightmare would be to have my parents and in-laws move in for a few weeks around the holidays. And so what happens to Carolina, but her parents show up to stay for a month. Her in-laws show up a couple weeks early, with Carolina’s husband, Jackson’s ex-wife in tow. Add a friend of her oldest son who has no one to help her, and the fiancé of a townsman, and you have a houseful! And all their drama.
I enjoyed this book even more than the first book. Lots of small town drama, and some real life lessons included. Lots of laughs!
Susanne Barbetta did a great job narrating, and Kay Dew Shostak knows small towns. I highly recommend this book!
