About this listen
A new serial killer is stalking Boston, killing his victims in bizarre ways, taunting the police with mysterious puzzles that reference the stars. As the stakes are upped and the pressure is on, the Boston Police Department is forced to call in its most brilliant - and most controversial - homicide detective: Avery Black.
Avery, still reeling from her last case, finds herself up against a rival precinct and a brilliant, cunning killer who is always one step ahead of her. She is forced to enter his dark, twisted mind as he lays clues for his next killing, and forced to look into places in her own mind she would rather not go. She finds herself compelled to seek the counsel of Howard Randall, the twisted serial killer she'd put behind bars years ago, all while her new burgeoning life with Rose and Ramirez is falling apart.
And just as things cannot get any worse, she finds out something else: she herself may be the target.
In a game of psychological cat and mouse, a frantic race against time leads Avery through a series of shocking and unexpected twists - culminating in climax that even Avery could not imagine.

Great story...but the narration is so wrong!!!
Great story, but the narrator has a fairly thick British accent for all characters for a story based in Boston,MA, USA. Although her intonation was better for each character than the last book, is was just wrong for a story in Boston. I don't know if I will continue with the series because of this.

Why is it all British for a Boston story?
I liked the story but the narration was really distracting both with the same accent for all characters and a too intense way of speaking. Disappointing read.

Settling Accounts
Book two in the Avery Black series finds Avery on the search for another serial killer, this one centered around the stars and planets . . . As Avery delves deeper into the case, she also is forced into a reckoning with her own past, including her ex-husband and her daughter, Rose . . . Cause to Run reveals what happened to Avery's parents and how Avery grew up . . . giving the listeners an "Ah Ha" moment or two, helping us to understand some of Avery's insecurities and her drive to catch the killers which she so fiercely pursues . . . this is some pretty rough stuff . . . and the source of many of her nightmares . . . the clues to the killings were confusing . . . but Avery stuck with it and decoded them like a master . . . the motivation behind the murders wasn't quite so clear . . . some reviewers found this to be frustrating . . . not me . . . as I don't believe there is always a cookie cutter answer . . . all in all, the resolution to book two was just a tad BETTER and more realistic than in the first book . . . and I am liking Avery more and more . . . looking forward to Book three . . .

Terrible narration
Story line was interesting although found little sympathy for main character, Avery Black. Narration was terrible and distacted from the story as the narrator had a pronounced English accent and the story took place in Boston. This is the second audio book I purchased where the narrator did not fit the locale of the story and I honestly hated it. I tried to give the narration a 1 but it would not register and tried to give over all a 2 which would not register. Just finished Witness where the narration added to the story so I'm not averse to English accents where the story takes place in England, Australia or other appropriate places.

Formula
This author has a formula and he's sticking to it. This is the third series where the main character is this perfectly flawed female detective. He has taken the typical macho man and given him breast. I feel like I only read half of the book because the story is so one dimensional. The killer is just a shadow. Like the boogie man that everyone talks about but no one sees. The narrator is horrible because her british accent is all wrong for the story. They're in Boston MA for Pete's sake! This is the same narrator from the other series as well, all set in the United States. I got these books on sale, so there you have it...
