About this listen
Did you know that the Catholic Church is the oldest institution to exist in the Western world?
The Catholic Church has a history that spans over 2,000 years, and it began with none other than Jesus Christ himself. At least, that is what modern popes believe. But at first, there was just one church, and there was no division between Catholics, Protestants, Eastern Orthodox, and other branches of Christianity. Christians all over the known world were united, and together, they made their spirituality bloom. Their religion took over the lives of villagers, nobles, kings, queens, and even newly arrived pagan armies that came to conquer Europe.
In Catholic History, you will find out:
- How Christ built the church on the rock that is Saint Peter
- Learn about Christianity during the age of Apostles
- How the first monasteries came to life
- Why Christians were persecuted through the ages
- How one emperor embraced the faith and legalized it
- The great schism that divided the Christians
- How the pope founded the Holy Roman Empire
- How emperors asserted their authority over the church
- Why Martin Luther revolted against the church
- Who started the reform of the church
- Who were the Jesuits, Jansenists, and Gallicans
- How the church survived the Age of Reason
- How the French Revolution influenced the papacy
- How liberal Catholics rose to power
- Why Pope Pius IX issued his famous Syllabus of Errors
- How the Catholic Church developed outside of Europe and traveled to the Americas
- What the role of the church is in the modern world and how the popes changed the conservative views of the medieval church into democratic and liberal ones

While the words and actions of the 12 apostles can be found scattered throughout the New Testament, putting together the pieces can be confusing, taxing, and just plain hard. Did you know that the first English settlement in the New World was a disaster? Perhaps you have heard the story of Roanoke before. Or maybe even the creation of Jamestown. But have you heard about the Spanish colonies in North America? Or the French and Dutch settlements? Colonial America was diverse, with European settlers from various nations coming to the New World and meeting the Native Americans who already inhabited the land. What were their interactions like? Was there any semblance of peace between all of the groups who called this land their home?

The path of following Jesus is an ancient and storied spiritual tradition. Yet many believers are not familiar with the three major forms of prayer and the three stages of spiritual growth that exist to bring them closer to God. In his most personal book yet, Brant Pitre, PhD, draws on the riches of the Bible, the words of Jesus, and the writings of mystics across the centuries to shed light on the mystery - and wonder - of the spiritual life.

Story
Over the past hundred years, scholars have attacked the historical truth of the Gospels and argued that they were originally anonymous and filled with contradictions. In The Case for Jesus, Brant Pitre taps in to the wells of Christian scripture, history, and tradition to ask and answer a number of different questions, including: If we don't know who wrote the Gospels, how can we trust them? How are the four Gospels different from other Gospels, such as the lost Gospel of "Q" and the Gospel of Thomas?

Story
The world hates the Church that Jesus founded, just as He said it would (John 15:18). It reviles her doctrines, mocks her moral teachings and invents lies about her history. In every age, but especially in our modern day, historians and political powers have distorted the facts about her past (or just made up novel falsehoods from scratch) to make the Church, and the civilization it fostered, seem corrupt, backward, or simply evil.

Whether taken as a book of faith or a cultural artifact, the New Testament is among the most significant writings the world has ever known, its web of meaning relied upon by virtually every major writer in the last 2,000 years. Yet the New Testament is not only one of Western civilization’s most believed books, but also one of its most widely disputed, often maligned, and least clearly understood, with a vast number of people unaware of how it was written and transmitted.

Story
The saints, the heroes of the Roman Catholic faith, lived lives of holiness, dedicated to serving God. The saints lived at different times in different places throughout history, but they all shared a love of God that has been documented through the teachings of the Church. Today, the saints serve as examples for all Catholics, showing the believers how to lead a more spiritual life. Catholic devotions are particular customs, rituals and practices of worship or in honour of the saints that are in addition to the liturgy of the Catholic Church.

Great historical accounting, illiterate voice actor.
Dozens of mispronunciations of names and general things by this reader throughout the book made it difficult to get through. The writer should have proofed his performance. The content however is good and very informative and I enjoyed learning about the church.

starting with the beginning
pretty interesting summary of the beginnings of Christianity, dealing with its biggest split in the 1500s, and ending with the current courses that began in the 20th century.
I have read a bit more in depth Christian history, that dealt with various leaders through the 16th century. But was nice to have some more information from that time, through today. obviously it couldn't be as detailed, due to space/time limitations. but it was still good. Sadly, my least favorite narrator was reading this, so I had to take a huge break from listening, in order to lessen my annoyance. the information at least made it more bearable

Poor narration
The narrator sounds like a game show host and his mis- pronunciations throughout are annoying (such as with the words Apostolic and edict).
By the middle of the book I wasn't really sure what was going on. Very disappointing because I'm interested in the content.
