About this listen

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Will an ancient curse darken the skies over Camino Island? Bruce Cable and Mercer Mann are about to find out.

Look for John Grisham’s forthcoming legal thriller, The Widow. This time, the verdict isn’t the end of the story.

Mercer Mann, a popular writer from Camino Island, is back on the beach, marrying her boyfriend, Thomas, in a seaside ceremony. Bruce Cable, infamous owner of Bay Books, performs the wedding. Afterward, Bruce tells Mercer that he has stumbled upon an incredible story. Mercer desperately needs an idea for her next novel, and Bruce now has one.

The true story is about Dark Isle, a sliver of a barrier island not far off the North Florida coast. It was settled by freed slaves three hundred years ago, and their descendants lived there until 1955, when the last one was forced to leave. That last descendant is Lovely Jackson, elderly now, who loves her birthplace and its remarkable history. But now Tidal Breeze, a huge, ruthless corporate developer, wants to build a resort and casino on the island, which Lovely knows, deep down, is rightfully hers.

Mercer befriends Lovely, and they plunge into an enormous fight over who owns Dark Isle, taking on Tidal Breeze Corporation, its lawyers, lobbyists, and powerful Florida politicians. But Lovely knows something about the island that could seriously cloud the dollar signs in the developer’s eyes: the island is cursed. It has remained uninhabited for nearly a century for some very real and very troubling reasons. The deep secrets of the past are about to collide with the enormous ambitions of the present, and the fate of Dark Isle—and Camino Island, too—hangs in the balance.

Critic reviews

“Light-hearted . . . The Camino books have felt like palate cleansers for Grisham, something fun to do before tackling the weightier issues that usually form the backbone of books such as The Client. . . . Grisham makes sure the book moves like the winds that buffet his fictional island.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune

I love Grisham's books on tape. I have listened to most of them with a 5 star rating,

This book although great missed the mark, The narrator selected did a poor job. Her New York accent was disturbing. Should have been read by a story telling black women pro from the south. Grisham's books do not need celebrity's to read them. He is the real deal. Story was great but not presented well. It was read like a 12th grade report not narrated will passion.

Love John Gisham. The story in very good, just couldn't get into with Whoopi Goldberg as the narrator. It just felt like my great aunt reading to me on a Sunday afternoon. Whoopi was just reading it - no feeling, and character embodiment.

I returned the book, cause I just couldn't get into it with Whoopi Goldberg's voice. I will order the book as a Kindle book.

Whoopi's voice was just not right

Whoopee use to be a favorite actress of mine… her hate filled viewpoint & mouth has destroyed any respect and appreciation I ever had for her. I’ve listened to Gresham books over and over thru the years. This one is a one and done.

One & done

It was hard at first getting used to Whopie’s familiar voice, but she did a professional job of narration and soon I forgot. Story was fascinating but too long

Up to Grisham standards it

When I first started reading this book I was surprised it was just another DEI book....the description of the way the slaves were treated was awful but then it became boring and predictable as upper middle class white writers who always seemed to have plenty of time and money, fight against the evil land developer and win. I expected more twists and turns, but was disappointed

Predictable and I found it boring

Usually love his books but this one gets too technical with too much narration and not enough interaction with characters. Very slow… not up to his usual work.
Do NOT like narrator.

Too much narration

I love the entire story. Couldn't put it down. Hard to believe that it was fictional.

Whoopi's voice, inflections and thoughtful reading.

I loved the description of the scenery the development of the characters, but most of all the story itself

The story

So far the Camino series is pretty entertaining, if not a little fluffy a lot of the time. Bruce is gross, yet kind of likable. Do I want Whoopi Goldberg to narrate all my books? No! That voice is too distinctive and iconic. But she's a great match for this particular book.

Always entertaining

The reader seemed disingenuous, lending no real definition of the characters. It seemed at times that as they were recording, this was the first reading.

The story felt true, impressive.
