About this listen
It's 1555. Calling Crow is haunted by his recurring dream of the Destroyer who will one day lay waste to his village. Then Spanish colonial slavers from the island of Hispaniola arrive on the shores of the Southeast, lands that have been home to the Muskogee people for generations. Calling Crow and another brave are taken and bound into slavery. Life in the gold pits and slave camps is humiliating and brutal, but Calling Crow refuses to let them break his spirit. Aided by a kindly priest, Calling Crow vows to learn the language and ways of an overwhelmingly powerful enemy in order to eventually save his own people. But first he must regain his own freedom.

Story
The existence of two simultaneous presidents has split the country along ideological lines. The protests are becoming violent. Sections of the country have formed their own militias, along with the militias of the two warring parties. In the midst of shortages of food and other necessities, gangs and thugs are terrorizing formerly safe neighborhoods. Realizing that it is no longer safe to remain in their home, Mike McNerney decides to pack the camper and flee to Canada with his wife, Marie, and disabled teenage daughter, Elly. Unfortunately, everyone else has the same idea.

Story
The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

Story
For centuries, the Vikings have swept out of the Norse countries and fallen on whatever lands they could reach aboard their longships, and few could resist the power of their violent onslaught. They came at first to plunder and then to settle, an encroachment fiercely resisted wherever they went. Such was the case in the southern lands of Ireland. En route to the Viking longphort there, known as Dubh-linn, Thorgrim Night Wolf and Ornolf the Restless stumble across an Irish ship.

Sucked me in!!!
I don't typically read historical fiction, however this book was suggested by a friend of mine so I gave it a try. It took a few chapters in the story line but then it had my complete attention!!! This is a great story full of twists and turns. The Narrater is right up there with the best of them. His ability to change from one characters voice to another was so smooth! I tried to find some thing I didn't like about this book and found it impossible. I am now listening to the second book in this series by the same Narrater and again he's nailing it!!

Calling Crow: A Good Start in the Series
"Calling Crow" was a nice listen. It had good characters and good world-building which will be great for the Southeast Series. It started out with a lot of oomph but a few times it was a little slow and that being said, I think this was a great start to a lively new series. Paul Clayton is an attentive author paying attention to detail which I liked. I'll be interested in seeing what direction book two takes. Nice work.
Kevin Arthur Harper had a great voice for Calling Crow. He has a nice tone and quality and speaks clearly at a good pace. I have only one little nit pick. Changing voices threw me off a few times. I know this is really hard to do but I think staying with the same voice is perhaps better. He's a fantastic narrator.

AMAZING HISTORICAL FICTION! :)
I found this absolutely enthralling, it's such an amazing story about an amazing man, it's a sad but beautiful tale about a Native American man who is tested in many ways throughout his journey. He loses his freedom, his family, then finally makes it back only to be shunned. Gripping and emotional tale, I really enjoyed the story, writing and narration. Great story! Would definitely recommend it, both for writing and narration.

Engrossing story once I got into it.
Indian chief captured and enslaved by the Spanish manages to return to mainland from Hispaniola and escape. Returning eventually to his village he is an outcast even there.
I love Kevin Harper's narration but in this case the Spanish accent was distracting. It reminded me of the old Cisco Kid tv shows.

Fantastic historical story!
Calling Crow is the chief and while out, he is captured by the Spanish and made a slave. The resulting story of his life as a slave, his ability to adapt and survive and even fall in love captured my attention and I simply couldn't put it down. I listened to the audiobook version of this book and Kevin Harper is perfect for this story. The timber of his voice, the cadence of his speech and his acting all contribute to a fantastic performance.
Moving on to book 2!
