About this listen

On the islands of California in 1500, a nation of Amazons welcomes a castaway who recruits them into a great war against their hated enemies - the Greeks. Taking their griffins along, they sail to Constantinople, where the Ottoman Empire and its allies are attempting to retake the great city from French, Russian, and Greek adventurers. As the war progresses, the Amazon queen Califia must guide her people through a complex conflict where nothing is what it seems and the very future of California hangs in the balance.

A retelling of the story from which the real-life California was named, Califia’s Crusade is an epic tale of vengeance, justice, and the cyclical nature of war and conquest. Califia must contend with threats from her enemies and allies alike, and danger lurks even within the ranks of her own people.

This story is such an interesting mix of elements - classic fantasy with historical realism, brutal combat with political philosophy, heroic courage with awkward romantic drama. I think there is a little something for everyone but especially any history buffs looking to take a little vacation. Though really the analysis of classic takes on religion, government systems, and honor really make you think about the traditions we have inherited and come to expect as the norm. Thought provoking and fun, it was a nice break from the stress of the everyday.
