About this listen

Amateur investigator Dave White and his husband, Chris Thorson. are are back in the fourth volume of this unusual series. If you enjoy the local color, characters and humor in Stephen Stanley's two mystery series featuring Professor Luke Littlefield or Jesse Ashworth, you will want to meet gay senior couple Dave and Chris in this series also. These Dave White series novels deftly combine strange thematic bedfellows such as murder, religion, history, humor, gay romance, commitment and open relationships. Dave and Chris are drawn into solving three murders at St. Matthew's Episcopal Cathedral in Minneapolis. As the bodies pile up, the congregation is suffused with fear that they are facing a serial killer, and the Cathedral's reputation is on the line. The Bishop and the Dean call in Cathedral member Dave to help clueless agnostic Lutheran Detective Sven Sanderson. He needs to understand church politics, customs and vocabulary to speed up his investigation, but he resents Dave's role of intermediary which has been forced on him by the Mayor and Chief of Police, who are close friends of the Bishop and very gay friendly. In addition, many of the Cathedral's members and clergy are gay, lesbian and transgender while Sven is definitely straight and disapproving. The clergy and members want the murders to be solved quickly. They fear their effort to recruit new Cathedral members among the Millennials moving into downtown high rises will falter in the face of the scandal and fear. In addition, the annual Gay Pride Festival is coming up in late June. It is one of the largest in the world with an attendance of 400.000. It is a prime recruiting time for the Cathedral which is located just across the street from Loring Park where the festival takes place. The Cathedral always has a contingent in the parade down Hennepin Avenue, a booth in the park, and a well attended church service by and for all GLBTQA+ people. Dave's investigation delves deeply into the internal politics of the Cathedral and into the forgotten history of the victims. At his 50th University Class Reunion, Dave helps to find a missing student and in the process uncovers long forgotten facts about one of the St. Matthew's murder victims. Along the way, Dave and Chris party at the reunion as well as at home and engage in their usual humorous banter and bon mots between themselves and with their friends, their condo building's Concierge Lance Wilson, as well as Skyhawk, their Native American friend and waiter at their Calhoun Beach Club. Dave and Chris also have several erotic sexual encounters with one another. with friends and with Emergency Room doctors as their life long gay partnership evolves into new more open and experimental territory in their retirement years. This fourth volume in the series can be read first and/or alone, but you will want to sample them all. The books are only recommended for adult readers.
