About this listen

As development and subsequent habitat destruction accelerate, there are increasing pressures on wildlife populations. But there is an important and simple step toward reversing this alarming trend: Everyone with access to a patch of earth can make a significant contribution toward sustaining biodiversity.

There is an unbreakable link between native plant species and native wildlife - native insects cannot, or will not, eat alien plants. When native plants disappear, the insects disappear, impoverishing the food source for birds and other animals. In many parts of the world, habitat destruction has been so extensive that local wildlife is in crisis and may be headed toward extinction.

Bringing Nature Home has sparked a national conversation about the link between healthy local ecosystems and human well-being, and this audio edition will help broaden the movement. By acting on Douglas Tallamy's practical recommendations, everyone can make a difference.

Living in NE PA, it was a great surprise that the author is from the same area and provides a lot of info from this region. A lot of well presented information, I would definitely recommend for anyone even slightly interested in reclamation ecology.

Great listen!

I bought this on audible first. Once I realized how much information it contained, I had to buy the book, and have already referenced it many times. Thank you!

This book really brought to light what I can do as one person to help our natural world. It was easy to listen to and I will use it as a reference in the future.

For someone like me who is an avid gardener and wildlife protector, this book is somewhat of a Bible. To my neighbors who mostly care about aesthetics and an easy garden experience, I’m afraid that this book will be dryly scientific. To those people I recommend Tallamy‘s book, Nature’s Best Hope. It’s difficult to convince my neighbor who is excited about the hundreds of Tower of jewels he has cultivated, to not only rip them all out, but destroy every seedling he can find. People need to care more about wildlife than aesthetics to even want to take in this critical information. I have a garden that I am attempting to keep 75% native. This is attracted much interest in my neighborhood which then leads to conversations about what I’m doing. My garden gives me an opportunity to educate and interact with my neighbors whom I might not have any otherwise interact with. I also live in a highly impacted tourist designation on the Northern California coast. People from all over the world stop in front of my garden. I do have to admit that I have planted flashy species like Protea, Rhododendron and a stunning Sally Holmes rose. Just like any beautiful face, they attract attention and draw people in… And then there I am hoping to capture them with an interesting story unknowingly educating them about the importance of regional natives in their gardens.

A nature lovers point of view…

I found this book to be life changing. I ripped most plants out (except mature trees) and we are going with all natives. A lot of species noted are from the East, however he does provides a website where you can search for native plants in your area. The website indicates which plants are most valuable to wildlife.

Tallamy makes a compelling case for why it is helpful to plant native species.
