 Traveling for plastic surgery and cosmetic dentistry has increased in volume year after year for over a decade. We see the trend and we think it’s going in the wrong direction. Modern medicine has improved the safety of surgical procedures and improved the beauty of the finished product. Unfortunately, most countries don’t offer the same level of infrastructure and basic standards to offer equivalent quality surgical care. There are a few exceptions, but it is nearly impossible to know where it is safe and where it isn’t unless you are an expert in the field. Just like medical tourism – dental tourism is the practice of traveling outside of the United States to seek dental work. The allure of traveling to a foreign, exotic land to seek out the world’s foremost expert in the world’s foremost field of study has an element of seductiveness. In reality, it’s quite the opposite. The bulk of the population that seeks dental or medical work outside of the U.S. are doing so in search of a deal … not better treatment or higher quality care … only a cheaper price. The would-be savings hunters may disguise that key part of the conversation in various ways, but it is only to dress up the reality that they are going because it is cheaper.
