Story
After thousands of years, Cain awakens to find that the world has gone on without him. In his slumber, humans and people of power have stopped being afraid of, well, anything. Beyond that, they’ve become cruel for cruelty’s sake, fascinated with their ability to spread death through famine, war, and even plagues. In their minds, they have no equal. They’re wrong.

The Galahad, a faster-than-light spacecraft, carries 50 scientists and engineers on a mission to prepare Kepler 452b, Earth's nearest habitable neighbor at 1400 light years away. With Earth no longer habitable and the Mars colony slowly failing, they are humanity's best hope. After 10 years in a failed cryogenic bed - body asleep, mind awake - William Chanokh's torture comes to an end as the fog clears, the hatch opens, and his friend and fellow hacker, Tom, greets him...by stabbing a screwdriver into his heart. This is the first time William dies.

Vakov Fukasawa used to be a Reaper: a bio-enhanced soldier fighting for the Harmony, against a brutal invading empire. He's still fighting now, on a different battlefield: taking on stormtech. To make him a perfect soldier, Harmony injected him with the DNA of an extinct alien race, altering his body chemistry and leaving him permanently addicted to adrenaline and aggression. But although they meant to create soldiers, at the same time Harmony created a new drug market that has millions hopelessly addicted to their own body chemistry.

An AI calling itself Schema has assimilated Earth into its System. As a consequence, everyone gained access to status screens, power-ups, and skills. This AI turned these concepts from fiction to fact. It's easy to become intoxicated with leveling up and becoming stronger. To some, it's too good to be true, like living out a dream. For Daniel, however, it's closer to a nightmare.

The eruptions of hostile energy from behind the Edge distorted the laws of the physical world, creating new life forms which now threaten to take over the planet. Achieves A Lot In Such A Short Story
4.5 out of 5 stars
I’m not going to lie, when I saw the cover of this… probably a year ago, I was excited for it, then subsequently bummed out because it wasn’t available on audio. Now, I know that making an audiobook isn’t easy or cheap but I’ve been spoiled with the massive amount of amazing audiobooks that are out there. Michael Patrick Hicks‘ books included. I’ve enjoyed every audiobook he’s put out – and I knew if/when this was released I was going to enjoy it as well.
I was right, Black Site was the exact short story I was looking for this weekend. I was able to start and finish it in one sitting and it was a complete story that didn’t need hundreds of pages or hours of audio to prove its point. Black Site was originally part of a collection of stories about clones, so the fact that this is about cloning was no surprise.
What was a surprise was the amount of “wtf” moments that Hicks was able to shove into such a short story. I can’t really talk about any of them because it would spoil it, but know that you’re in for a book that messes with your mind. And one that definitely had me aching for more Hicks audiobooks.

Good quick listen with plenty of twists
The book details advertise for fans of Alien and Lovecraft. I am fans of both and the story didn’t disappoint. It’s. A short story so there isn’t too much detail I could give that wouldn’t provide spoilers. Suffice it to say it’s worth getting. Sit back hold tight and get ready for the thrills. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator or publisher
