About this listen
A desperate woman...
Everything changed for Laura Taylor when the South lost the Civil War. The Yankees' arrival in South Carolina drove Laura and her soldier husband, Jesse, westward to seek a new beginning. But Laura's hopes crumble when Jesse dies, and she finds herself pregnant and alone in a wild railroad camp with winter coming in fast. The only one she can turn to is Dr. Spencer Hardin.
A vengeful man...
Spencer returned from the war to discover his wife had run off with another man, taking his young son with them. Vowing to get his child back, he started the long journey to San Francisco, and not even the revelation of his wife's death could stop his vengeful journey. But when a blizzard rages, Spencer finds himself stranded, fighting for the lives of Laura Taylor and her baby, and the first steps on the path to redemption.

Arabella of Byrum's stunning beauty is her blessing and her curse. It drew the brutal Elias of Woolford to make an irresistible offer for her hand in marriage, and it fueled the jealous rage that made Elias break that bond - leaving Arabella with an infant Elias refuses to acknowledge as his, and a shattered reputation. Despite the slanderous rumors about Arabella, William of Blackleith wants her when no other lord will.

Story
Lucien de Clare is England's handomest and most brazen lord, a man whose scandalous behavior made the doors to polite society close against him. This makes him the perfect pawn in Kingsley's despicable plot to secure an heir. But the plot for a deceitful seduction of Elinor leads to true desire, as Lucien is overcome by Elinor's beauty and charm. Neither trecherous intrigue nor vengeful deeds can temper their desire for forbidden kisses, or dampen the fire that fuels their love.

Story
The year is 1878, peak of the Texas cattle trade. The place is Dodge City, Kansas, a saloon-filled cow town jammed with liquored-up adolescent cowboys and young Irish hookers. Violence is random and routine, but when the burned body of a mixed-blood boy named Johnnie Sanders is discovered, his death shocks a part-time policeman named Wyatt Earp. And it is a matter of strangely personal importance to Doc Holliday, the frail 26-year-old dentist who has just opened an office at No. 24, Dodge House.

Story
The Civil War tore at the very roots of our nation and destroyed most of a generation. In rural Arkansas, the Hancocks were devastated by that war. They not only lost everything, but experienced an unimaginable hell. How does a traumatized human being put themselves back together? Where does a person begin to heal his or her broken mind…and does one choose damnation or redemption? For the Hancock siblings: Doc, Sarah, Butler, and Billy, the American frontier becomes a metaphor for the wilderness within—raw, and capable of being shaped.

There was trouble in Haven, Arizona, and Ranger Sam O'Ballivan was determined to sort it all out. He arrived posing as the new schoolteacher, and his first order of business was to bring the rough ranchers' children under control. To that end, he called on Maddie Chancelor, the local postmistress, whose younger brother was in firm need of discipline. Sam wasn't sure what to expect - but it was definitely not this graceful woman whose prim, proper stance was so at odds with the fire in her eyes.

Second chance love
Two strong but emotionally wounded people find true love and happiness in this wonderful second chance romance.
I love Anita Mills writing, she has a wonderful way with words, her characters are strong without being over the top and storyline are engaging without angsty overdramatics or preachy moralising.
Loved the story, definitely recommend!

A good book
It didn't cover very much of the civil war as I had hoped it would. It was basically the story of two people and their trials and tribulations and how a war brought them together. Two people who were both touched by the war and yet found happiness through an awful era in our country's history.
