About this listen
Multiple personalities take over Sarah's mind...only so they can protect her.
Abducted by her father when she was three, Sarah found herself in a world of criminal neglect and unfathomable oppression as her father and stepmother perpetrated more and more horrible acts of verbal, mental and sexual abuse on the innocent girl. So continually terrified was Sarah that she began to form separate personalities so that she herself did not have to face the hideous reality of her day-to-day life. Only through the nightmare pictures that the other personalities sometimes presented to her while she slept did Sarah have any hint about the horrific abuse she was being subjected to. The personalities would block out time for Sarah and bear the horror of the experiences themselves so that their dear Sarah would not have to.
Although the names in this unforgettable story have been changed from those in real life, the horrors that occurred are factual. This tale of the author's early life - a life on the run, hungry, terrified, and molested - is a true and unnervingly gripping account of the extremes of neglect and mistreatment a child can undergo.
Bitter Memories: A Memoir of Heartache and Survival is dedicated to all adult survivors of abuse and is written with the hope that exposing these horrors will help to prevent them from happening to others.
Child abuse is a national epidemic. By sharing my story, I hope people will get involved when they see, or suspect, child abuse. Call the police! You could make a difference in a child's life so he or she wouldn't have to endure a life of pain. To the survivors of abuse, by telling my story it can give hope. They will learn they are not alone and there is healing on the other side of those feelings that try to destroy a life of happiness.

Story
I was born and broken in Birkenhead, abused from infancy by a network of every kind of pervert from ‘thinks it’s love’ to ‘show it hurts’. I was unwanted, beaten, sold, swapped, photographed, filmed, left for dead, corrupted, blamed, betrayed, ignored and orphaned. But I was also born with a fire inside me. I call it my Phoenix Fire. I am no victim—that word only describes what happened to me. Nor am I a survivor because that implies I am over it. I am a Phoenix—a work in progress. This is my story....

Story
Nine years after Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, and only a year before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, a judge in the Forsyth County Courthouse of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, wrenched 12-year-old Gene Cheek from the security of his mother's devotion. Here is a true story of love in a time afflicted by hatred, ignorance, and racism. At its core, this is a frank account of a love affair between a White woman and a Black man that took mother from son and split a family forever.

Story
In 1911 two British heiresses, Claire and Dora Williamson, read a brochure about a revolutionary fasting treatment that promised a lifetime of good health. The sanatorium in the village of Olalla, west of Seattle, was surrounded by a beautiful forest, sparkling waters and fresh air. The sisters agreed it sounded perfect and exactly the restorative holiday they needed. But within a month of arriving, under the supervision of Doctor Linda Burfield Hazzard, Claire and Dora began to realise the frightening truth – they were not patients but prisoners at the isolated sanitorium.

It’s my stepdaughter, Shelby, who is babysitting my three-year-old Millie. "I only went upstairs for a second," she says through her sobs. "She’s gone." When the police turn up, Shelby’s story starts to unravel. What is she hiding? Then I get a message saying, "Your husband is not who you think he is." Suddenly, my family feel like strangers. Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
The book was interesting.
What didn’t you like about Roni Gallimore’s performance?
I hated that the narrator spoke in character voices, save that for the kids.

Terrible! Ugh!
The story is unrealistic, and the narrator's preschool voice is grating. This is the most boring waste of time I have experienced in quite some time.
