Selena Quintanilla Pérez nació en 1971 en Lake Jackson, Texas, en una familia de ascendencia mexicana y cheroqui. Su talento para el canto no tardó en revelarse y desde los nueve años formó parte de una banda de música junto con sus hermanos.
Desde el restaurante de comida mexicana de su padre hasta los principales escenarios de música, Selena se convirtió en la reina del tex-mex, la música texana. Durante toda su vida reivindicó su mestizaje y sus raíces latinas y norteamericanas.
Fue muy querida en vida, por ese motivo, la noticia de su asesinato a manos de la presidenta de su club de fanes conmocionó no solo a sus admiradores, sino a toda la sociedad estadounidense.
