Susan Bennett
About this listen
"Narrator Susan Bennett offers a moving performance of this multilayered story of two women whose lives are affected by a WPA mural.... Overall, Bennett adds an exciting dimension to a gripping story of racism, madness, murder, and even romance." (AudioFile magazine, Earphones Award winner)
From New York Times best-selling author Diane Chamberlain comes a novel of chilling intrigue, a decades-old disappearance, and one woman’s quest to find the truth....
North Carolina, 2018:
Morgan Christopher's life has been derailed. Taking the fall for a crime she did not commit, her dream of a career in art is put on hold - until a mysterious visitor makes her an offer that will get her released from prison immediately. Her assignment: restore an old post office mural in a sleepy Southern town. Morgan knows nothing about art restoration, but desperate to be free, she accepts. What she finds under the layers of grime is a painting that tells the story of madness, violence, and a conspiracy of small town secrets.
North Carolina, 1940:
Anna Dale, an artist from New Jersey, wins a national contest to paint a mural for the post office in Edenton, North Carolina. Alone in the world and in great need of work, she accepts. But what she doesn't expect is to find herself immersed in a town where prejudices run deep, where people are hiding secrets behind closed doors, and where the price of being different might just end in murder.
What happened to Anna Dale? Are the clues hidden in the decrepit mural? Can Morgan overcome her own demons to discover what exists beneath the layers of lies?
A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin's Press
Praise for Big Lies in a Small Town:
"Chamberlain’s depictions of creative beauty and perseverance across time and in the face of inevitable obstacles will keep readers turning the pages." (Publishers Weekly)
"Chamberlain’s writing is reminiscent of a quilt made up of pieces from different people, places, and times, stitched together into a single, emotional story." (Booklist)

Story
Getting snowed in at a luxurious, rustic ski chalet high in the French Alps doesn’t sound like the worst problem in the world. Especially when there’s a breathtaking vista, a full-service chef and housekeeper, a cozy fire to keep you warm, and others to keep you company. Unless that company happens to be eight coworkers…each with something to gain, something to lose, and something to hide.

big lies in a small town
one of the best books I've listened to in very, very, long time.. I will be looking to hear more of Diane Chamberlain books and or listen to to any books with the narrator Susan Barrett. I felt like I was there, watching a movie listening to this book. I couldn't stop listening. it was so emotional, the characters in the book were awesome to the end. I will recommend this to others to read. whomever disliked this book didn't listen to it all the way through. or whether this book is fiction or not. these are things everyone has gone through and probably still have to go through maybe not to the extreme they did in that era but prejudism is still out there unfortunately . but the strength and courage that was displayed in this book. I loved!

LOVE LIVE LOVE IT!!
This is one of those books that will be a keeper. The worst part of the book was that it ended. The writing sucks you in and you fall in love with all the characters. I couldn’t put it down. It’s been awhile that I enjoyed a book this much. Now to find my next read? It’s like a hangover

Please read (listen to) this book!
Oh what a wonderful performance this narrator did! This story just resonated with me so well and now I’m emotional writing the review. I hope Diane Chamberlain knows how impactful her novel is. And Susan Bennett just perfectly captured these characters with her voice. If you are a woman who is going through a tough time, I think this novel will resonate with you as well. “You have to make peace with the past or you can never move into the future.”
Of course, everyone has an opinion. Not every likes this story or the performance. I encourage you to make your own decision, form your own opinion, and draw your own conclusions. Please just give this story a chance before you judge.

Loved this story!
This is by far the best book I’ve listened to in a long time and I’ve recently read several classics. I love the way the chapters alternated with past and present and I loved the ending. It’s the first time I’ve cried at the end in a long time. My only negative is that it’s over.

What a delightful story. Intriguing with a hint of romance. Wondered why Morgan was picked to restore the mural and didn’t see the reason coming. Loved the split times following two separate yet related lives. Nicely done Diane Chamberlain.
