About this listen
"I'll clip ya, Bergen... so help me, I'll mow you down!" Charlie cheerfully threatens, insults, and otherwise needles the elegant Edgar through 16 digitally remastered episodes - all of them from the 1950s, and seven of them never before available to the public. The aging, man-crazy mannequin Effie Clinker bends your ear (and her elbow); and modest Mortimer Snerd gives new meaning to the phrase "ventriloquist's dummy". Meanwhile, music and performing legends Rosemary Clooney, Fred MacMurray, Jo Stafford, Peggy Lee, Liberace, David Niven, and Gordon MacRae, bring their melodies and their mischief to the program. Of course, The Mellow Men are on hand, and even Bergen sings! EPISODES INCLUDE: Guest: Gordon MacRae 10-11-53; Guests: Fred MacMurray and Anita Gordon 10-18-53; Guest: Liberace 01-17-54; Guest: Dorothy Kirsten 01-24-54; Guest: Terry Moore 01-31-54; Guest: June Allyson 02-28-54; Guest: Jane Wyman 03-14-54; Guest: Peggy Lee 03-21-54; Guest: Rosemary Clooney 03-28-54; Guest: David Niven 04-04-54; Guest: Jo Stafford 04-11-54; Guest: Ann Blyth 04-25-54; Guest: Aline Mosby 12-18-55; Interplanetary Western 04-08-56; Ben Him 04-15-56; Lost in the Woods 04-22-56.

The impeccably dressed Charlie McCarthy was as sarcastic as he was stylish. His country cousin Mortimer Snerd was buck-toothed, bucolic...and just as fondly remembered. But it was the egalitarian and exquisitely entertaining Edgar Bergen who brought them to life. Enjoy this Peabody Award winning team in 16 digitally restored and remastered episodes - many of which have not been available since their original broadcast in 1942! Hear performances by Rita Hayworth, W. C. Fields, Harold Peary, Hedy Lamarr, Don Ameche, Dale Evans, and more....

Here's one of radio's greatest comic rivalries: the blustery W. C. Fields facing off against the impudent Charlie McCarthy! You'll also hear Don Ameche, Dorothy Lamour, Nelson Eddy, and some guy named Edgar Bergen! The pomposity of Fields' comic persona clashes spectacularly with Charlie's, the foe of the haughty and the self-absorbed, in their no-holds-barred feud.

Best Series of the Bergen/McCarthy team
This series is much snappier than earlier ones where Don Ameche's operatic influence dampened the comedy. There are still lots of songs and popular music, but none of that classical stuff. Kirkland's voice (much like Berle Ives) provides a good foil to all of Bergen's characters. There are plenty of guest stars to banter with Charlie before performing.
