A Portuguese galleon anchors unseen offshore—its crew cruel, greedy, and thirsting for flesh. Rich pearl beds in the Americas have bled the Caribbean native populations dry. Now, the slave traders arrive with a savage mandate: capture the strong, kill the rest. No witnesses. No mercy.

The raid is swift and monstrous. Fire consumes homes. Screams rend the sky. Dembe’s youngest son is slain before his eyes. He, his wife Moussane, and their surviving child are shackled, marched to Goreé Island—the infamous portal to bondage.
