About this listen

The story is set in the late 1920's and the story makes you feel like you are in Chicago at the time the Italian mobs were ruling the town. Rosemary is an only child from an Italian family that is related to Al Capone. Antonio is from an Irish-German family and he works for his father as a mechanic. His father works for a rival mob family. They had a chance meeting at a coffee shop near her college and they eventually fall deeply in love. This is similar to a modern Romeo and Juliet type story. This is a sad, deep and moving story. If you enjoy a good story about forbidden or frowned upon love/relationships, you will shed a tear just as I did. Rosemary and Antonio are people who live on the other side of the tracks. The other side of personal morals; the other side of the universe in the 1920s of America. This story will melt your heart and touch your soul but also make you happy! It's 1929, Prohibition in Chicago. Antonio and Rosemary meet by accident in a coffee shop. Rosemary believes it was by accident. She finds out much later it wasn't. Love grows during another civil war between the north and south- Northern Chicago and George 'Bugs' Moran and Southern Chicago and Al Capone. While Rosemary and Antonio's love grows deeper, the hatred between Bugs and Capone grew more violent. Antonio was determined to provide a future for himself and his lovely Rosemary. Full of old world romance and charm, Rosemary and Antonio are facing a more modern set of problems. This is a wonderful book about young love in the wild and perilous time of prohibition era Chicago. In the late twenties, the city was basically a war zone split between the camps of Al Capone and Bugs Moran as each sought to wrest control from the other. Innocent citizens were often killed and wounded in the gang violence that filled the city as bullets flew with no regard for bystanders. Rosemary, an Italian girl, meets Antonio who is the son of a German-Irishman, and while their differences mean nothing to them, Rosemary worries that her parents will not accept him. Ms. Fostino creates a brilliant connection between Rosemary's family and the infamous Capone and an equally interesting relationship between Antonio and Moran. This eventually sets up a case of mistaken identity which strains the bond between the two young lovers. The pace of the story is quick but at the same time it is richly detailed and it's easy to place yourself in the story. From a small corner coffeehouse to Wrigley Field to the final notorious scene, the author gives us a whirlwind tour of Chicago. It is extremely difficult to write a story based in such a well-documented era, and with the exception of a couple minor historical inaccuracies, Ms. Fostino did a fantastic job on her research. Rosemary & Antonio is a coming - of – age story set in the gang – ravaged city of Chicago in the 1920’s. It begins when young mechanic Antonio May introduces himself to the naïve Rosemary Macino at the local coffee house. Antonio is a carefree young man. He is learning the trade of auto repair from his father. He has no serious thoughts about the responsibilities of adulthood until he meets Rosemary sitting all by herself in a crowded café. Rosemary is going to school to become a teacher. She is the first in her family to have a high school diploma. She never gave boys the time of day until she met Antonio. Antonio rattles Rosemary’s easy relationship with her parents and threatens her chances of graduation. Rosemary falls in love, yet she has a dark secret that she is hiding. She struggles with her new love, but she is pretty sure he is worth the risk.
