About this listen
In this riveting memoir, renowned mountaineer Lou Dawson shares a tumultuous coming-of-age journey, from the flatlands of Texas to the Colorado mountains, steeped in the counterculture revolution of the 1960s.
Amidst the towering peaks, Lou discovers an enduring love for alpine sports: scaling cliffs, topping summits, skiing powder snow. However, as the avalanches fall and lifestyle choices veer, his pursuit of adrenaline becomes a poignant struggle for meaning in a culture where nothing succeeds like excess.
This deeply moving narrative invites listeners to join Lou as he navigates a precarious path toward fulfillment, showcasing his transformation from a reckless, thrill-seeking youth to a devoted father determined to build a stable foundation for his family.
Lou Dawson's extraordinary journey, both through the mountains and the recesses of his heart, serves as a timeless exploration of self-discovery and spiritual growth, offering listeners a poignant glimpse into the transformative power of the wild, and the indomitable strength found within.

So interesting!
I’ve always enjoyed Lou’s writing on wildsnow.com and this audiobook was the perfect way to hear more about what got him into climbing. It was very easy to listen to and anyone who loves skiing and climbing will not be disappointed.

Great memoir from a legend of the sport
Definitely recommend to anyone the least bit interested in mountain sports. I started following Lou through his wildsnow.com site in the mid-00’s. I didn’t realize the extent of his climbing background until I listened to the book. That was very cool, especially his involvement in the testing of Friends, which have become such a ubiquitous and irreplaceable part of climbing. I especially liked the parts with his family, his obvious love and devotion to his wife and son are inspiring. Really, this is just a great memoir of a really interesting and good person.

A captivating Story
This is not only was the a well written and well read work, it is a piece that sparked and inspired daydreams of my own. My partner and I can rarely settle on a audiobook to drive to at length, but whether it was the time and place of driving through the North Cascade, the flow of the story or tone of the performer, this title won our hearts.
From North Bend, Washington to Lander, Wyoming this book kept us entertained with Avalanche Dreams in the midst of a hot June.
Thank you, Lou.
