About this listen

Hello and welcome to: Herbs, Vitamins, Minerals, Akkermansia, and Diabates.

I have written over 20 books on my experience making lifestyle and nutrition changes to reach a goal of being medication free and free of using a Blood Glucose Monitor - CGM. This personal journey is documented in the Reversing and Preventing Type 2 Diabetes series.

Often, we think of herbs, as seasonings, things we add to food to make it taste nice. Vitamins and minerals are as being pills in bottles in neat rows on drug store shelves.

In reality: “In the month prior to the(eir) interview, 40.1% of adult Canadians took supplements.” [1]

Dietary changes to a Whole Food Diet, removing sugar, refined carbohydrates and all foods that would be Class 4 on the NOVA Food Classification System were the biggest changes I made. During the changes, I supported my body by adding additional vitamins and minerals.

In this book, I describe how I supported my body and take a deep dive into the meaning and value of herbs, vitamins, and minerals in general. I discuss their value to the human body with attention to Diabetes and disorders related to Metabolic Syndrome, such as Cardio Vascular Disease, Liver disease, obesity, etc.

Obtaining these valuable nutrients from natural sources is the first step. But the body’s microbiome must process and manage that food so that nutrients so they contain can find their way into the blood, which carries them to the muscles and tissues.

Your gut microbiome is a microscopic world within the world of your larger body. The trillions of microorganisms that live there affect each other and their environment in various ways. They also appear to influence many aspects of your overall health, both within your digestive system and outside of it.[2]

Akkermansia lives in the microbiome and is one of the “good bacteria.” It was only discovered in 2004. It is not found in food but consuming foods is beneficial for it will help improve the gut microbiome overall and encourage Akkermansia specifically. It is now available as a supplement.

Akkermansia triggers GLP-1 a natural hormone produced by the body and which has a strong bearing on Type 2 Diabetes, Obesity, gut health, metabolism and weight management in general. It also helps with feelings of satiety after a meal. It is a very important discovery and we talk about it here.

I hope you enjoy the book and see how a whole food diet can improve your health and perhaps reduce the number of supplements you are taking. Akkermansia is a new discovery which is important to all diabetics, not just Type 2 Diabetics like me.
